NY PopsUp, a months-long festival starting February 20 that is billed by organizers as a model for how live performances can return amid Covid-19, has set details for its high-profile inaugural edition. Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo first revealed the initiative, which will run through Labor Day via a public-private partnership overseen by producers Scott Rudin and Jane Rosenthal. PopsUp events, which will span New York City’s five boroughs as well as upstate and Western New York, will be accessible to the public and most are free of charge. Confirmed performers include Hugh Jackman, Renée Fleming, Amy Schumer, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patti Smith, Mandy Patinkin, Q-Tip and Billy Porter. Fresh off Sundance and a series of compelling interviews about how she chronicled the Covid-19 outbreak in China and its rampage across the the U.S., Nanfu Wang ’s In the Same Breath will have its New York premiere as the opening film in the Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight 2021 . The twenty-year old fest will be virtual, running from March 18 to April 5, with 18 documentary features, short films and special projects. Two films are world premieres and several are North American premieres, including the closing selection, Julien Faraut’s Les sorcières de l’Orient ( Oriental Witches ), the account of a historic Japanese women’s volleyball team and its meteoric ascent to the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. Swirling chaos surrounding New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo deepened Wednesday as a former aide accused him of inappropriate behavior, accusations the governor called “quite simply false.” The former aide, Lindsey Boylan , who worked for the state’s economic development agency, led off a blog post on Wednesday alleging harassment on a plane flight in October of 2017 when she said the governor said that they should play strip poker. Boylan also alleged other incidents including an unsolicited kiss on the lips, frequent remarks by the governor about female colleagues and another aide telling her Cuomo had a crush on her. The post includes what she says are text messages and emails from the time. The governor is currently in the midst of a scandal for allegedly under-reporting Covid nursing home deaths in the state. The truth is, with all we know, people still die.” Cuomo was responding to a cascade of reports over the past few days that his administration had withheld information about the scope of devastation wrought by Covid-19 in the state’s nursing homes. On Friday, The New York Times reported that a top Cuomo aide revealed in a private conference call with Democratic donors that NY withheld data because it feared an investigation by then-President Trump’s Justice Department. “The issue of mutations is top of mind,” said Governor Gavin Newsom at his Wednesday Covid-19 press conference, “not only here in the State of California , but across the globe.” Newsom then confirmed the first cases in the state of the variant first discovered in South Africa. On Tuesday, the governor reported that that variant had not been detected. But he said on Wednesday, “as of a few hours ago, two cases have been reported…one in Alameda County and one in Santa Clara county.” The CDC says the South African variant — also known as B.1.351 — seems to be more transmissible. One study also indicated it might be resistant to at least one vaccine. Officials in South Africa this week halted the rollout of AstraZeneca vaccines — which are not yet being used in the United States — because the vaccinations were found in a clinical trial not to be effective in slowing spread of the South African variant.
