DGA Report: Women & Minorities Score Record Share Of Episodic TV Directing Jobs
The percentage of women and minority directors of episodic TV shows hit record highs this year, continuing the TV industry’s recent trend towards diversification, according to a new Directors Guild report. In the 2017-18 season, women directed 25% of all episodic shows – up from 21% last year and nearly double their percentage from five years ago. The percentage of minority directors also hit a new high, although their share of directing jobs grew at a slower pace than women’s. This year, they got 24% of all directing jobs, compared to 22% last year and 19% five years ago. African Americans directed 13%, the same as last year; Asian Americans directed 6%, up from 5%; and Latinos directed 5%, up from 4%. Men took the biggest hit – down from 79% last year to 75% this year. Native Americans weren’t mentioned in the report. Peter S. Davis Dies: Producer Of ‘Highlander’ Franchise Was 79
Peter S. Davis , the producer of the popular cult Highlander franchise, died in his sleep February 21 at home in Calabasas, CA, his son, Epic magazine co-founder Joshua Davis, told Deadline. He was 79. Davis began his career as a Wall Street lawyer and launched his own firm in his 20s before heading to Hollywood in 1977. He produced more than 20 films during his career, including the early Brad Pitt starrer Cutting Class (1988), Joe Pesci’s Family Enforcer aka Death Collector (1976), and Sam Peckinpah’s last film The Osterman Weekend (1983). He worked with Bob Shaye and Bill Panzer to produce New Line Cinema’s first film, Stunts starring Robert Forster. Above all, Davis is known for Highlander (1986), which began as an overlooked script written by UCLA undergrad Gregory Widen. Writer-Producer Soo Hugh Inks Overall Deal With UCP; Launches Asian Incubator Program
Writer-producer Soo Hugh is getting into business with UCP . Hugh has signed a multi-year overall deal to develop, write and produce projects for the studio, a division of Universal Studio Group. As part of the deal, Hugh will launch an incubator program with the mandate of helping new Asian voices create shows and establish careers in the industry. Hugh is currently adapting Min Jin Lee’s international bestseller Pachinko as a drama series for Apple+. She also serves as showrunner and created the vision for the series, which chronicles the hopes and dreams of four generations of a Korean immigrant family. Previously, Hugh was the co-showrunner for the first season of AMC’s The Terror, the critically-acclaimed drama produced by Ridley Scott and starring Jared Harris, Ciaran Hinds and Tobias Menzies.
