‘This Is a Play About Shades’: Jeremy O. Harris Revisits ‘Slave Play’ Script

· February 28, 2021 ·

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ( $39 rather than the average $124 ), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadwa y and live performances around the globe. With everything in disarray, it was unclear whether the theater awards would happen due to the protracted season. Related Stories What It Took to Orchestrate 'Bad Romance' for 'Moulin Rouge! Minneapolis To Hire “Social Media Influencers” To Report During Upcoming George Floyd Death Trial

· February 28, 2021 ·

The media covering the upcoming trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin ’s role in the death of George Floyd will have some new competition from messengers hired by the Minneapolis government. A team of social media influencers will be enlisted by the Minneapolis City Council to send “approved messages” during the upcoming trial, according to reports. The city plans to pay six influencers $2,000 each to disseminate the city’s views, Fox News said . The plan was approved Friday by the council. “The goal is to increase access to information to communities that do not typically follow mainstream news sources or city communications channels and/or who do not consume information in English,” the council said in a statement, WCCO-TV reported . “It’s also an opportunity to create more two-way communication between the city and communities.” The city council said it is targeting social media users with large followings. Live Events In Los Angeles Still Cautious: E3, Anime Expo Going Virtual, LA Marathon Moving To Fall

· February 28, 2021 ·

Conventions and live events are playing it safe when it comes to bookings in the Los Angeles area, according to a report from the Board of the Dept. of Convention and Tourism Development Commissioners. In one big move, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3 , has backed down from previous plans to stage a live show and will instead do a virtual event. E3 2020 was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic last June, and this marks the second year in a row without a physical event. Last year, many publishers and game developers staged their own virtual events, which may hurt future mass gatherings like E3 as vendors become more comfortable with the format. Similarly, the Anime Expo will go virtual over July 4th instead of its planned gathering. The Expo is still planning on signing a deal to stage shows in Los Angeles through 2030, the department reported. BET’s music and events festival, The Experience, will not hold its live event at Los Angeles … [Read more...] about Live Events In Los Angeles Still Cautious: E3, Anime Expo Going Virtual, LA Marathon Moving To Fall

Hendrix: The End Of A Beginning, Maybe

· March 19, 1970 ·

I t was a New York winter day, frozen and gray and violently blustery. Indoors, out of the fearful cold, people seemed somehow gentler toward one another – strange in New York City – as if it was enough to battle the elements, no need to battle each other. Inside his manager’s neo-turn-of-the-century apartment, on a sofa near the radiant fireplace, sat Jimi Hendrix , in a gentle, almost reticent frame of mind. The light snow had begun to fall. You could see that through the narrow slits where the curtain allowed the merest sliver of daylight and streetscene to penetrate into the gloomy dark room. On the same sofa, and on a richly upholstered chair next to it, sat the members of Jimi Hendrix ’s new band. He had broken up the old Experience (Noel Redding on bass, Mitch Mitchell, drums) at some indeterminate point during the Fall. He had been living and jamming with an all-purpose crew of musicians – everything from older black gentlemen from the South who played blues guitar, to … [Read more...] about Hendrix: The End Of A Beginning, Maybe
