Free Speech Insurance: An Idea That Could Even Help The Oscars

· February 15, 2021 ·

I was mulling a New York Post report that half the employees at The New York Times are afraid to say what they’re thinking when it hit me.  It’s time for Free Speech Insurance. This is nothing like libel insurance, which protects a publisher, and maybe a writer, from defamation claims. Under a Free Speech policy from Mutual of Nowhere, you wouldn’t be allowed to defame, abuse or promise violence against anyone. TJ Ducklo would still be out of a White House job if he threatened to “destroy” a Politico reporter. No claim there. No compensation. But good free speech coverage would pay if you are fired, suspended, banned from professional status or otherwise deprived of income or community standing for voicing a thought that bothers someone else. Savdhaan India Shooting Disallowed By FWICE After Fatal Accident Of Crew Member

· March 1, 2021 ·

Savdhaan India crew member Pramod Kalekar died in a bike accident on February 13, 2020, at around 4.30 am, after working for nearly 19-20 hours. Apparently, the deceased was an Assistant Art Director on the crime show, which is being produced by Rajesh Tripathi. According to ETimes report, the shooting of the show has been stopped by the Federation Of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). FWICE president BN Tewari was quoted as saying, "There was no shooting of Savdhaan India since that ill-fated day. As far as I know, we have been seeing repeat episodes of old." Apparently, FWICE has asked producer Tripathi to pay Rs 20 lakh to Pramod's wife Savita Kalekar as compensation. But it seems that he took time to shell out the amount as he argued with FWICE. It is also reported that FWICE had ordered Rs 50 lakh to be paid, but the federation consented on Rs 20 lakh. The president said, "Tripathi did pay Rs 20 lakh but the show's broadcaster had also been asked … [Read more...] about Savdhaan India Shooting Disallowed By FWICE After Fatal Accident Of Crew Member

Former New York Times Reporter Donald McNeil Responds To Controversy Over Remarks

· March 1, 2021 ·

Donald G. McNeil Jr., the veteran New York Times reporter who left the newspaper last month amid the controversy over his use of a racial slur, responded to accusations against him in a lengthy series of Medium posts today. McNeil, who had been with the Times since 1976 and specialized in coverage of infectious diseases, had used the n-word during a discussion he was having with high school students on a Times-sponsored trip to Peru. In January, The Daily Beast informed McNeil that it was working on a story about his conduct during the trip, which also included claims of other offensive statements. In the Medium posts, McNeil wrote that the Beast’s depiction of him was inaccurate, but he also faulted the Times for the way that it handled its response to the story.
