Highlights include the continued rollout of Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 with a good start in Australia, a sizable bow for China’s Shock Wave 2, the debut of Disney/Pixar’s Soul and a brand new milestone for Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train which has officially overtaken Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing film ever in Japan. Starting with Wonder Woman 1984, the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel added an estimated $19.4M from 40 overseas markets, taking the international box office cume to $68.3M. ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Lassos $38.5M In Offshore Debut As China Cuffs Expectations; Japan’s ‘Demon Slayer’ Closing In On ‘Spirited Away’ – International Box Office
MONDAY UPDATE, writethru after Sunday 10:08AM post: Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 in 32 international box office markets this weekend has opened to an estimated $38.5M from 30,221 screens. This is well below the $60M the industry was expecting ahead of the launch, and is largely down to a soft China debut of $18.8M in what was a slow Middle Kingdom moviegoing weekend overall. There were also sudden market closures over the past several days overseas which did not help. In IMAX, the Gal Gadot-starrer grossed $5M from 31 markets. Of that, $3.8M came from 680 screens in China. IMAX is also citing standout performances in Japan, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, UAE and Ukraine. ‘Debris’: NBC’s J.H. Wyman Sci-Fi Series Lands In France & Japan
EXCLUSIVE : NBC ’s sci-fi drama Debris , starring Jonathan Tucker and Riann Steele, from Almost Human creator J.H. Wyman, has landed its first international sales. Legendary Television , which co-produces the series with Frequency Films and Universal Television, has sold exclusive distribution rights to French network TF1 and Japanese streamer U-Next. It comes ahead of Debris’ premiere on NBC on March 1. Written by Wyman, Debris is said to be in the vein of The X-Files and Men In Black . In it, two agents, played by Steele and Tucker, from two different continents, and two different mindsets, must work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind. ‘Age Of Samurai’: Netflix Drops Trailer For Japanese Warrior Docu-Drama From Cream Productions
Netflix has unveiled the first look at Age of Samurai – a series that looks more like an action flick than a documentary. The streamer has dropped the first trailer (above) for the six-part series, which is produced by Canadian production company Cream Productions . The series looks at the warring kingdoms of feudal Japan in the 16 th Century – the Sengoku period – a time of ubiquitous civil war, social unrest and political intrigue. It tells the story of Date Masamune, a notorious samurai known as the ‘One-Eyed Dragon’ who fought alongside the three founding fathers of Japan – warlords who led fierce armies of samurai against each other to unite the nation 400 years ago. His is thought to have been the inspiration for the design of Darth Vader’s iconic helmet. ‘Soul’ Nears $100M Overseas & Becomes No. 2 Pixar Pic Ever In China Where Pre-Sales Pop For Lunar New Year Movies – International Box Office
Disney/Pixar’s Soul continues to shine overseas with a $96.2M cume after seven frames. In 11 markets this session, the Pete Docter-helmed original added $6.9M to its international box office kitty with No. 1s again in Russia and Korea. In China, it has surpassed Incredibles 2 to become the market’s 2nd highest-grossing Pixar title ever. China in general had a soft session as the market looks forward to the Lunar New Year releases which begin rollout on February 12. Detective Chinatown 3 will storm the box office there next weekend, having hit over RMB 350M ($54M) in overall pre-sales, per Maoyan.
