UK Government Opens Floodgates To Production Restarts By Launching $646M Emergency Covid Insurance Fund

· July 28, 2020 ·

The British government has listened to months of industry lobbying and launched an emergency £500M ($646M) film and TV coronavirus production insurance fund, which could open the floodgates to a backlog of shoots worth an estimated £1BN ($1.3BN). In a massive boost for an industry stricken by the pandemic, trade body Pact announced the insurance solution in a release on Tuesday afternoon. It signals that producers can get back into filming with a safety net, given that the fund will effectively underwrite the cost of productions closing in the event of a second lockdown. Pact, flanked by the BFI and major industry players, has led months of constructive talks with the government over an insurance solution. The discussions have taken longer than hoped due to the unprecedented nature of the intervention and the fact that European Union clearance was required. Coalition Of Hollywood Producers, Guilds Asks Senate For Targeted Pandemic Insurance Relief, And Fast

· February 19, 2021 ·

A broad entertainment industry coalition Friday begged Senate leadership to push ahead with Federal aid for pandemic insurance since it’s near impossible to get back to work without it, especially for independent film. Short of something really big — like the public-private Pandemic Risk Insurance Act (PRIA) originally proposed last May by New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney —  a group including the MPA , IFTA , Hollywood guilds and even NASCAR urged a “bridge” solution, similar to dedicated funds set up in other countries like the U.K . “The lack of business insurance coverage for coronavirus pandemic losses is a critical issue for the economy at large, but it is a threshold issue for the continued operation of our industries. Simply put, it is enormously challenging for us to go back to work absent pandemic insurance coverage. Federal legislation is needed to get American workers meaningfully back to work on films, television, and sports productions,” said the letter to … [Read more...] about Coalition Of Hollywood Producers, Guilds Asks Senate For Targeted Pandemic Insurance Relief, And Fast

UK Publishes Details For $646M Film & TV Production Insurance Restart Scheme

· September 17, 2020 ·

The UK government has published the awaited eligibility criteria and guidelines for its £500M ($646M) film and TV production restart program. The scheme is aimed at helping UK productions that have been suspended and are not able to secure insurance going forward, or are yet to start because of no existing insurance, get back underway before the end of the year. Following industry lobbying, the government committed to an emergency COVID insurance fund back in July. It will be available to compensate productions after they have restarted, and only where costs are then incurred due to delays or abandonment as a result of coronavirus. Among productions that won’t be eligible are news and current affairs, live events broadcasts such as sports or theater or musical screenings, and productions in front of a paying live audience. What Went Wrong With ‘The Rhythm Section’? Action Pic Could Lose $30M+

· February 2, 2020 ·

You could tell that there was something wrong with The Rhythm Section as early as last April when Paramount didn’t include the title in its CinemaCon reel of then-intended big pics like Terminator: Dark Fate and Gemini Man. After what was buzzed to be a female James Bond pic from 007 Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, we finally learned why Paramount didn’t bet on this critically panned-audience rejected knock-off of La Femme Nikita. Rhythm Section reps Blake Lively’s lowest wide opening at the domestic box office with $2.8M. It’s an unfortunate setback for the former Gossip Girl alum, who’s proved herself to be bankable on a global basis with A Simple Favor ($97M+) and The Shallows ($119M). Man, she even injured her hand during filming. Note this is a film that she over-delivered on, and critics have been quick to note her sublime performance. Rhythm Section is also the lowest opening ever for a movie debuting at … [Read more...] about What Went Wrong With ‘The Rhythm Section’? Action Pic Could Lose $30M+
