Punk music has always been about individuality. Although skinheads and fascists have periodically tried to co-opt and homogenize the genre over its 50-year history, they have always failed, because the true spirit of punk begins with an original thought, a unique life story, and the poetic philosophies that truth is beauty and that the pomp and artifice of pop music are a distraction from expressing something deeper. At its core, punk is the people’s rock & roll. Perhaps that’s one reason why the genre appeals more broadly than some other styles of rock to people from every background, and why there have been strong black voices in the genre almost from the beginning, whether it was drummer D.H. Peligro railing against Reagan with the Dead Kennedys or guitarist Rocky George sending up blind capitalism on Suicidal Tendencies’ “Join the Army.” Anyone can play punk, and everyone is welcome, so why not just do it? Here is a decades-spanning selection of 15 bold songs by vital black … [Read more...] about Music at Home: 15 Great Punk Songs by Black Artists

ABC Unveils Extended First-Look For ‘Home Economics’ Comedy, Produced By & Starring Topher Grace – TCA
ABC released an extended first-look clip for new comedy series Home Economics during the show’s virtual TCA presentation today. The Topher Grace -fronted series premieres on April 7. Inspired by the real-life experiences from writer and executive producer Michael Colton, the show documents the uncomfortable yet heartwarming relationships of three siblings in very different situations: one in the ultra-rich, one in the middle class and one scraping by. Co-writer and producer John Aboud said they were looking for the next great family sitcom that included the national conversation surrounding income inequality and thought Colton’s financially diverse family was fit for the part. The writers observed though there have been many great family dramas, none tackled monetary differences among characters. “We’ve been fans of Modern Family forever. But when you look at those three families and how those stories intersect… All those guys are rich,” Aboud joked. … [Read more...] about ABC Unveils Extended First-Look For ‘Home Economics’ Comedy, Produced By & Starring Topher Grace – TCA

In the snippet, Springsteen tells Obama he knew he wanted to be a musician at age 15, but to purchase his first guitar, he first needed to save up $18. To do so, he painted houses, tarred roofs, mowed lawns, and eventually had the money to purchase the instrument at the Western Auto Store in Freehold, New Jersey. When it came to actually learning how to play, Springsteen says he turned to his cousin Frankie, who’d also just picked up the guitar: “He taught me a few chords and sent me home with a folk music book that had all the chords in it,” Springsteen says. “So, for about a month or so I was strumming my way through folk music classics. You know, ‘Greensleeves,’ and ‘If I Had a Hammer.’ And shortly after that, somebody taught me to play ‘Honky Tonk.’” … [Read more...] about Springsteen Recalls Early Guitar Memories in New Clip From Podcast With Obama
