I could go on for hours about the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic: the number of people who have lost their lives, the economic turmoil, the businesses that have been forced to close their doors and the ones still struggling to stay afloat. But I won’t. You’re already aware of the statistics, the ominousness. Every person who writes about the pandemic’s impacts speaks to this data. My industry — the retail industry — is one of the sectors that has been greatly affected by the pandemic, which cut off practically all cash flow from physical retail locations due to closures and restrictions. And as the pandemic continues, it’s impossible to anticipate when lockdowns and social distancing protocols will end so that stores can operate at full capacity again. But there has been one light at the end of this unrelenting tunnel, and it’s the one I want to focus on. Pay-TV Bundle Is Getting “Priced Out Of The Market,” But Charter CEO Remains Bullish On Video Business
Charter Communications CEO Tom Rutledge sees the pay-TV bundle continuing to shrink because it has been “priced out of the market” during the streaming era. But video will remain a key part of the company’s strategy. “Live TV will continue to be sold in a linear package for a significant period of time,” he said during an online session today at Morgan Stanley’s annual Technology, Media & Telecom conference. “There are a lot of customers and users who enjoy that experience. But it is being priced out of the market in many ways and the new streaming and on-demand products really haven’t been successful from a linear perspective yet. Obviously they’re gaining some traction in the marketplace.” Related Story Fubo TV Revenue Passes $100M For First Time In Q4, With Subscribers Approaching 550,000 Charter bucked the trend in 2020 and actually added a small number of video customers, Rutledge noted. FuboTV Shares Continue Plunge As Bears Feast On Streaming Upstart – Update
UPDATED with today’s stock movement. FuboTV shares slid another 16% today on heavy trading volume as pessimistic investor sentiment on the streaming startup held sway on the final day of 2020. At $28.01, the stock is back where it traded two weeks ago, before a massive boom lifted it above $62, on volume nearly nine times normal levels. There didn’t seem to be any news weighing on shares, and the downturn came as the major stock indices ended 2020 in positive territory for the day. Despite the slump, FuboTV stock is among the year’s top performers in the media sector, having more than doubled from its IPO price in October. PREVIOUSLY: FuboTV’s yo-yo action on the New York Stock Exchange continued Wednesday as shares in the streaming service fell 14% to $33.31 amid a noisy debate about the stock’s potential. Required ’opt-ins’ will squeeze Facebook ’s ad business as Apple ’s upcoming iOS 14 update asks consumers for permission to be tracked, the social media giant’s CFO reiterated Tuesday, noting other headwinds like a post-Covid spending shift from products to services, and lowering expectations for FB’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. Apple’s AppTracking Transparency policy has put a prompt in iOS 14 requiring users to allow tracking across other apps and sites, or not. It’s ignited a simmering Cold War between the two companies (both of which are under fire for various alleged abuses of market power). “We do expect this to be an impact to the business and impact our growth rates” chief financial officer David Wehner said at Morgan Stanley’s virtual media/tech conference. “We’ll be looking at opt-in rates.” He called it a problem for the entire “ecosystem.” Related Story 'Roar': Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever & Alison Brie To Star In Anthology Series From … [Read more...] about Facebook Execs Talk Advertising, Apple, Privacy And Ray-Ban Smart Glasses
