The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set

· November 16, 2016 ·

In the past couple of years, the Who have found themselves between generations. They’ve been playing songs from throughout their 50-year career on the road, but the audiences, by Pete Townshend‘s estimation, have been skewing younger and younger. “When we started this tour, we were pleased that maybe 20 percent of our audience was under 30,” he tells Rolling Stone. “And the numbers have just increased. It just means we’re playing music to a new audience. Sometimes they’re familiar with it but mostly, if they’re familiar with it, they’re certainly not jaded by it. They’re not bored with it. They’re not looking for something new from it. They’re just taking it at face value and fitting it into the modern world in whichever way is pertinent, and that is fantastic to me as a performer but also fantastic to me as a writer.” This surge of interest from millennials has come at a surprising time for the group, which … [Read more...] about The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set

Bruno Mars Catfish Allegedly Swindles TX Woman Out of $100k

· February 10, 2021 ·

Getty Bruno Mars ' "24K Magic" became a $100k nightmare for one Texas woman, who told cops she was hoodwinked into forking over a fortune to someone passing as the singer. The alleged victim was 63 when she told cops in Houston she made an IG account in 2018, and connected with someone claiming to be Bruno. She says the person developed an online relationship with her and eventually asked for cash. Of course, as is oftentimes the case with these stories, she says she cut a couple of checks and put 'em in the mail, as instructed -- one for $10k, and another $90k. Police say the money found its way into the bank account of one Chinwendu Azuonwu -- a local man who was taken into custody on money laundering charges, along with an alleged accomplice, Basil Amadi , who's facing similar charges. Both men were in court this week. According to legal docs, obtained by TMZ, 2 cashier's checks were made out to "Chi Autos" at the behest of the fake Bruno, to cover … [Read more...] about Bruno Mars Catfish Allegedly Swindles TX Woman Out of $100k

For ‘Supalonely’ Star Benee, Pop Music Is Therapy

· February 12, 2021 ·

“Happen to Me,” the first song on Benee ’s debut album, Hey u x , kicks off with a line about her fear of dying in a freak accident. It’s a song about anxiety and dread, inspired by her reoccurring thoughts of airplanes crashing, raging fires, getting kidnapped, and just being alone. But the 21-year-old singer-songwriter — born Stella Rose Bennett — says it was a snap to write: “The sadder songs are normally a lot easier. They just have such intense emotions. It feels great venting it all out.” That instinct hasn’t steered her wrong yet. Her hit single “Supalonely” has raked in more than 2.5 billion streams worldwide; Elton John declared it music’s “next global smash.” On the song, she paints a picture of herself as a fuck-up, a loser, a quitter, and a sad girl, but she does so in a way that isn’t at all self-indulgent, thanks to the upbeat music, the sarcasm between the lines, and the levity of her delivery. It’s the catchiest and most danceable track on Hey u x , which also … [Read more...] about For ‘Supalonely’ Star Benee, Pop Music Is Therapy

Wall Street’s Big Win

· August 4, 2010 ·

C ue the credits: the era of financial thuggery is officially over. Three hellish years of panic, all done and gone – the mass bankruptcies, midnight bailouts, shotgun mergers of dying megabanks, high-stakes SEC investigations, all capped by a legislative orgy in which industry lobbyists hurled more than $600 million at Congress. It all supposedly came to an end one Wednesday morning a few weeks back, when President Obama, flanked by hundreds of party flacks and congressional bigwigs, stepped up to the lectern at an extravagant ceremony to sign into law his sweeping new bill to clean up Wall Street. Obama’s speech introducing the massive law brimmed with celebratory finality. He threw around lofty phrases like “never again” and “no more.” He proclaimed the end of unfair credit-card-rate hikes and issued a fatwa on abusive mortgage practices and the shady loans that helped fuel the debt bubble. The message was clear: The sheriff was padlocking the Wall Street casino, and the … [Read more...] about Wall Street’s Big Win
