Scottish writer-director Charlotte Wells lights up Cannes Critics’ Week with Aftersun , the absorbing story of an 11-year-old going on holiday with her father. Paul Mescal ( Normal People, The Lost Daughter ) stars alongside Francesca Corio in a terrific two-hander with engaging supporting performances. Shot on location in Turkey, the film is partly a comedy-drama about a package holiday, but also a meditation on memories of a father with mental health problems. The young Sophie (Corio) is clearly happy to be spending time with her dad. Mescal is playing slightly older than his 26 years, but it’s still suggested that he had a child too young. People assume they’re brother and sister; he doesn’t want to hang out with other parents because they’re too old. Separated from Sophie’s mother, he does his best to show his daughter a good time, but there are limits to the local attractions for this slightly odd couple. There’s swimming in the pool, mocktails in a shisha café and one … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Paul Mescal In Charlotte Wells’ ‘Aftersun’

Trump’s Bigotry Is a Drug to Texas Republicans
When Donald Trump ’s stumbling campaign blew into Texas for a three-city tour last week, its literature described its second and last rally in the state as an event in Houston, one of the most diverse cities in the United States. But it wasn’t. Trump’s rally was held in The Woodlands, a too-clean and vaguely menacing compound of glass, steel and well-manicured lawns some 35 miles north of Houston’s downtown. Instead of a city council, The Woodlands, founded by George Mitchell, the pioneer of shale fracking, has an executive board. Residents of The Woodlands are more than 92 percent white. It’s easy to see why Trump went there: The few protesters who drove in from out-of-town were easily kept in check by the horse cops providing picket defense for oil company headquarters and chain restaurants. Trump’s rallies and fundraisers in the state were chock-a-block with the color we’ve come to expect. He didn’t make a lot of sense . He said some provocative things . He swore, and … [Read more...] about Trump’s Bigotry Is a Drug to Texas Republicans
Manish Naggdev To Get Engaged With Malika Juneja In Goa; Actor Talks About His Wedding Plans
Manish Naggdev and actress-turned-airhostess Malika Juneja had a roka ceremony in July 2020 and are all set to get engaged on June 8 in Goa. According to Times Of India report, the wedding will be held in September. Talking about the wedding and engagement plans, Manish said, "Malika and I had been planning the wedding for the past year. However, it kept getting postponed because of the COVID-19 scare. Since we plan to have an intimate wedding affair, we decided to have an engagement party. We tried to organise it in Mumbai, but it was turning out to be very expensive. At this stage, we didn't want to spend a lot of money. The idea was to keep it small and have a great party." The actor said that their wedding will not be a grand celebration as they plan to have a simple wedding or it could be a court … [Read more...] about Manish Naggdev To Get Engaged With Malika Juneja In Goa; Actor Talks About His Wedding Plans
MAGA Law: How the Trump Judges Twist U.S. Justice
The hard right’s takeover of the Supreme Court is real, and is having real consequences. But despite that leaked decision that would overturn Roe, this takeover isn’t just about abortion, and it’s not just about the Supreme Court. In fact, Trump-appointed judges at all levels of the judiciary are remaking nearly every aspect of American law, from voting rights to environmental regulations, police accountability to LGBTQ and women’s equality. There are also a lot of these judges. In four years, the Trump administration put a record 226 life-tenure federal judges on the bench. And while these judges don’t make the headlines like the Supreme Court does, they are already transforming our country, a little bit at a time. Perhaps most important, they will be there many, many years. Because Trump’s minions chose the youngest cohort of judges in recorded history, some of these people are in their thirties and forties. That means they could still be on the bench in 40, even 50 years — … [Read more...] about MAGA Law: How the Trump Judges Twist U.S. Justice
Kremlin Goes After Its Ultimate Foe: Rob Reiner
The Russian government announced sanctions against nearly 1,000 Americans Saturday, effectively banning them from entering the country due to their support of Ukraine during the ongoing invasion. However, among the hundreds of politicians, journalists, intelligence officers and professors, a pair of names stand out on the Kremlin’s list: Rob Reiner and Morgan Freeman . Another chance that Reiner might film the upcoming Spinal Tap sequel in Moscow have been dashed as the filmmaker has been barred from the country for his role as “one of the creators of the Internet resource Investigate Russia .” Reiner has also long pushed the Russiagate theory, going as far as stating that Donald Trump was Vladimir Putin’s “asset.” While Morgan Freeman has not tweeted about the Ukraine invasion, the actor was penalized over his voiceover work in a 2017 video messaged that accused “Russia of conspiring against the United States and calling for a fight against our country,” the … [Read more...] about Kremlin Goes After Its Ultimate Foe: Rob Reiner
