NYC Mayoral Candidate Andrew Yang Goes For ‘Boogie’ As City Theaters Reopen – “A Powerful Signal”

· March 5, 2021 ·

NYC Mayor candidate Andrew Yang hit the AMC Empire in Times Square early Friday, buying evening tickets for Eddie Huang’s Boogie and talking to a small group of press as cinemas around the city opened for the first time since last March. “It’s a film set in New York and the filmmaker is Asian American and right now it seems like a time for us to be supporting Asia Americans. I also have a sense of just how difficult the film business is,” he said. “So supporting New York and an independent film that has very New York roots makes me very happy.” “I think the reopening of movie theaters is a very powerful sign that we can do things that we used to do pre-Covid,” said Yang, who also ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Yang volunteered that he’s a AMC Stubs member — the chain’s frequent moviegoer pass. “Few things gave me more pleasure and  joy than getting free popcorn after seeing enough movies and racking up enough points.” Someone who’s not rushing to … [Read more...] about NYC Mayoral Candidate Andrew Yang Goes For ‘Boogie’ As City Theaters Reopen – “A Powerful Signal”

Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”

· March 5, 2021 ·

Got a new agenda, With a new dream, I’m kicking out the old regime, Liberation, elevation, education. The lyrics of Janelle Monáe’s Oscar shortlisted song, “Turntables” are a call for accountability flavored with positive promise. Written for the Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés-directed documentary about Georgia political activist Stacey Abrams, All In: The Fight for Democracy , Monáe’s song aligns in every sense with Abrams’ single-minded refusal to tolerate insidious, endemic and overwhelming voter suppression following her 2018 run for governor of Georgia. Rapping about a “new dream”, Monáe speaks to the long-sought turning of a societal and political tide in this country. The call came early on in the pandemic. As an Abrams fan and a Georgia voter herself, Monáe had previously offered to help Abrams in any way she could. But when the documentary team approached, Monáe was, she says, “not in a healthy space mentally”. Not only were her tour dates disappearing and … [Read more...] about Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”

Rep Eric Swalwell Sues Trump Over Riot, I Thought I Was Going to Die

· May 3, 2021 ·

Getty Rep. Eric Swalwell squarely blames Donald Trump and the former president's cohorts for the violent mob that stormed the Capitol, saying he texted his wife what he believed might be his final words before he was killed. Swalwell is suing Trump, along with Donald Trump Jr. , Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Mo Brooks for encouraging the crowd to take care of business at the same time the Congress was certifying the Presidential election. Getty Swalwell says as he watched in horror as the rioters breached the Capitol, he texted his wife, "I love you very much. And our babies." He says he listened to the House Chaplain pray for the members inside the House Chamber. Getty Swalwell's lawsuit is the real deal because he has legal standing to sue for his personal emotional distress, although the lawsuit also suggests he has standing as a member of Congress to sue for the disruption of the electoral process. · March 5, 2021 ·

New York City, the nation’s leading movie market along with still-shuttered Los Angeles, springs back to life Friday after being flattened by Covid-19 for nearly a year. A pulse was detected in advance ticket sales with a handful of shows selling out at AMC Entertainment ’s flagship Empire 25 theater in Times Square including a 4:30 p.m. Tom & Jerry and evening screenings of Boogie, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 and Tenet — as the Christopher Nolan pic released August 12 bends the laws of time. New releases Raya and the Last Dragon and Chaos Walking were big sellers on Day One uptown at the AMC Magic Johnson. One excited customer is NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Yang — he’ll will be heading out for a date night to celebrate. “That dinky, and let’s be honest, tacky, sign in LA can’t mask the fact NYC is the real entertainment capital. So get your popcorn ready, folks, because movie theaters are back in action and it’s date night at the … [Read more...] about New York City Cinemas Reopen Today After A Year; What To Expect As Tickets On Sale From ‘Raya To ‘Tenet’
