Yash Raj Films ’ action thriller Pathaan , starring Shah Rukh Khan , is shattering box office records, grossing 591 crore rupees ($73.6M) worldwide in just six days, with an impressive $27.56M coming from overseas. It’s a huge relief for the Bollywood film industry, which has had a string of flops or almost hits over the past few years, and disproves industry fears that the rise of OTT in India has killed the cinema star. Khan is back bigger than ever in his first major release since Zero in 2018. Deepika Padukone and John Abraham also star in the film, about an exiled spy working to take down a rogue agent who plans to release a deadly lab-generated virus across India. Pathaan director Siddharth Anand sat down with Deadline to discuss the film’s success, future projects and the development of action cinema in India. M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Knock At The Cabin’ To Knock ‘Avatar 2’ Out Of No. 1 Spot – Box Office Preview

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

After reigning over the box office for the past seven weekends, 20th Century Studios/Disney/Lightstorm’s four-time Oscar-nominated Avatar: The Way of Water will cede No. 1 to Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan thriller Knock at the Cabin , which is set to do $15 million-$17 million per tracking sources at 3,600 theaters. Reviews haven’t hit yet on the feature take of Paul Tremblay’s national bestseller The Cabin at the End of the World , and we won’t know until we’re in the thick of the weekend with audience exits whether this pic over-indexes or not. The better the surprise in a Shyamalan ending, the better the box office. Helping Knock at the Cabin ‘s ticket sales are Uni’s grab of PLF and Dolby auditoriums. The movie follows a girl and her parents who are taken hostage during their vacation by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse. ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ Tops Broadway Box Office; ‘The Piano Lesson’ Closes On High Note

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

The long-running The Phantom of the Opera was once again Broadway’s highest grossing show last week, taking in a mighty $2,483,532 for the week ending Jan. 29, outpacing runners-up Funny Girl ($1,872,862) and Hamilton ($1,871,921) by a noticeable margin. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Majestic has experienced a remarkable resurgence in interest (and box office) since announcing a closing date last year (the final performance, after a 35-year run, is April 16). Earlier this month, Phantom reported its 20 millionth audience member since opening in 1988. Overall, the 23 Broadway shows on the boards last week held steady with the previous week, grossing $25,705,039, with attendance of 206,578 at about 94% of capacity. The average ticket price for all the shows was $124.43, reflecting the discount pricing of some shows during the annual NYC Broadway Week promotion (which continues through Feb. 12). In its final week of performances, August Wilson’s The … [Read more...] about ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ Tops Broadway Box Office; ‘The Piano Lesson’ Closes On High Note

Costume Shop Workers At L.A. Opera Ratify First-Time IATSE Contract

January 31, 2023 by deadline.com

Costume shop workers at the Los Angeles Opera , who are represented by IATSE Local 768, have voted unanimously to ratify a new three-year contract – their first with the Opera. Last September, they leafleted the Opera’s opening night gala in an effort to bring public awareness to their demands for a fair contract. Most of their co-workers – the Opera’s stagehands, dressers, treasurers and ticket sellers, musicians, performers, stage managers, and hair and make-up artists – have long worked under union contracts. It wasn’t until now, however, that union protections have been won by the costume shop workers, who are largely women, people of color or LGBTQ. “Prior to forming their union, a large majority of workers were unable to save money for emergencies or plan for the future,” said IATSE Representative Allison Smartt. “The contract’s increased wages, benefits, and job security will mean these amazing craftspeople can have family sustaining careers; and with their … [Read more...] about Costume Shop Workers At L.A.
