EXCLUSIVE : George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead universe is expanding with a new audio series. The classic horror franchise is getting a scripted podcast series, The Dead , that will tell new stories and expand characters from the universe. The original 1968 film was directed by Romero from a screenplay by Romero and John Russo. It follows seven people trapped in a farmhouse in western Pennsylvania, who are under assault from zombies. It has spawned five sequels and a slew of spinoffs. The Dead will be set in that world and comes from Cinedigm-backed Bloody Disgusting , which is co-producing with the George A. Romero Foundation. It will feature 24 episodes as well as a full cast and will be distributed by the Cinedigm Podcast Network. Writers will be chosen to pen the stories following an application process through which the George A. Romero Foundation will select the best candidates. Jenna Bush Hager & UIS To Adapt Jessica George Debut ‘Maame’ For TV
Jenna Bush Hager ’s Thousand Voices and Universal International Studios are developing Jessica George’s debut novel Maame into a TV series. The book was released today in the U.S. and was Today with Hoda & Jenna host Bush Hager’s February pick for her monthly #ReadWithJenna. The novel centers on Maddie, whose life in London involves being primary caretaker for her father, who has advanced stage Parkinson’s, and dealing with her nightmare boss. When her mum returns from her latest trip to Ghana, the self-acknowledged late bloomer leaps at the chance to get out of the family home and start living. George will co-adapt the TV version with Everthing I Know About Love scribe Yemi Oyefuwa. The adaptation is the second to come from Bush Hager’s deal with UIS , which was struck a year ago and has also spawned a version of Kirk Wallace Johnson’s The Feather Thief . In the midst of their third month as newly appointed DC co-Bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran finally revealed their plans for an inter-connective universe for the comic book giant spanning largely film and TV in a strategy unlike the Warner Bros. brand has ever had before. Entitled Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters”, a portion of what will unfold between 2025-2027 includes five movies including the Gunn-penned Superman Legacy , a new Batman and Robin title, The Brave and the Bold , a Swamp Thing feature, and films centering around Supergirl and the deeper universe DC rogue squad The Authority . Yash Raj Films ’ action thriller Pathaan , starring Shah Rukh Khan , is shattering box office records, grossing 591 crore rupees ($73.6M) worldwide in just six days, with an impressive $27.56M coming from overseas. It’s a huge relief for the Bollywood film industry, which has had a string of flops or almost hits over the past few years, and disproves industry fears that the rise of OTT in India has killed the cinema star. Noah’s Day Zero Productions has hired Chloe Ifshin as VP of Scripted Television and Eugene Han as Head of Unscripted Development. It comes after the departures of Devon Quinn and Ashley Dizon and as its television slate is ramping up with projects such as The Turning Point for MSNBC, For All Humankind for Discovery+, and Kid of the Year for Nickelodeon. The company is also developing a scripted series adaptation of Kiese Laymon’s novel Long Division. The long-running The Phantom of the Opera was once again Broadway’s highest grossing show last week, taking in a mighty $2,483,532 for the week ending Jan. 29, outpacing runners-up Funny Girl ($1,872,862) and Hamilton ($1,871,921) by a noticeable margin. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at the Majestic has experienced a remarkable resurgence in interest (and box office) since announcing a closing date last year (the final performance, after a 35-year run, is April 16). Earlier this month, Phantom reported its 20 millionth audience member since opening in 1988. Overall, the 23 Broadway shows on the boards last week held steady with the previous week, grossing $25,705,039, with attendance of 206,578 at about 94% of capacity. Costume Shop Workers At L.A. Opera Ratify First-Time IATSE Contract
Costume shop workers at the Los Angeles Opera , who are represented by IATSE Local 768, have voted unanimously to ratify a new three-year contract – their first with the Opera. Last September, they leafleted the Opera’s opening night gala in an effort to bring public awareness to their demands for a fair contract. Most of their co-workers – the Opera’s stagehands, dressers, treasurers and ticket sellers, musicians, performers, stage managers, and hair and make-up artists – have long worked under union contracts.
