SINGER Mariah Carey has spoken for the first time about her secret 17-year battle with bipolar disorder. The superstar, 48, was diagnosed in 2001 when she was treated in hospital for a physical and mental breakdown. But she spent years in denial before revealing her illness now. In a bombshell interview the Dreamlover singer said: “I didn’t want to believe it. Until recently I lived in denial and isolation, in constant fear someone would expose me. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that any more. “I sought and received treatment. Mariah Carey has finally decided to come forward about the mental illness she's been suffering from for years. The legendary singer told People this week that she was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder in 2001 and has been in "constant fear" of being exposed, but is now hopeful that the stigma can finally be lifted soon. "Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me," she told the mag. "It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music."
