No one was worrying about having the perfect colored front door.” — David Crank  On Paul Greengrass’s News of the World, production designer David Crank recreated six cities and invented another in charting the 1870s Texan journey of a news reader and his charge.  While the story spanned over 300 miles, the film was shot within a 30-mile radius of Santa Fe, New Mexico. UPDATED FIGURES, 4:15 PM PT Monday : There’s a lot this weekend that’s reminiscent of last year’s comparable frame, which again has a Hunger Games movie atop the heap, and a space sci-fi epic coming in at No. 2 across the globe. And yet, there are shifts to watch. The Martian seemed to have a strong China debut all but assured this weekend given the performance of recent comps, its own stellar run elsewhere and a plotline that puts the Chinese in nice light. Debuting in the Middle Kingdom this past Wednesday, it grossed a fantastic $50M to best the starts of films like Gravity and Interstellar . As Mockingjay ($21.8M) and Spectre ($83.4M) have all but legged out, a question now might become how The Martian stretches over the next short while before the December China blackout hits. Established Middle East players Front Row Filmed Entertainment and BeIN Media Group have renewed their multi-year home entertainment agreement, which sees Front Row’s English language feature films head exclusively to BeIN’s movie channels in the Middle East and North Africa. This time, the companies have added an SVOD window to the existing first pay TV deal. Front Row acquires more than 100 feature films a year. Eon, MGM and Sony’s superspy pic crosses the pond November 6 to get domestic turnstiles spinning again. With 007’s spectacular $80.12M overseas debut , plus a Drac-tastic expansion for Hotel Transylvania 2 , Sony earns bragging rights this week to the international Nos. 1 and 2 films; it’s also got Goosebumps in the Top 10 in a staggered rollout. It’s too early to make a clear call what effect this will have on Sony’s bottom line — Spectre is only open in six markets, and MGM handles some territories.
