Brazilian filmmaker Julia Murat clinched the Golden Leopard prize in the main international competition of the 75th Locarno Film Festival with her latest feature Rule 34 . The film follows Simone, a young law student who finds a passion for defending women in abuse cases. Yet her own sexual interests lead her to a world of violence and eroticism. Rule 34 is Murat’s third feature film after Pendular , which picked up the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2017 Berlinale. The Brazillian filmmaker’s first film, Found Memories , debuted at Venice. Locarno’s Golden Leopard comes with a CHF 75,000 cash prize to be shared equally between the director and the producer. Murat produced the film alongside Tatiana Leite. This year’s Golden Leopard competition jury was comprised of Swiss producer Michel Merkt, British filmmaker Prano Bailey-Bond, French filmmaker Alain Guiraudie, American producer William Horberg, and Italian director Laura Samani. Step Right Up! As The Film Awards Season Opens, Everyone Is A Winner
Now comes my favorite part of the film awards season, the very beginning, when everyone is a contender. It’s just like the old days, when the carnival came to town (also in late summer). Step right up, everyone’s a winner ! Take a shot, win a prize !! You can’t win if you don’t play the game !!! We all know it isn’t quite true. Some of these movies don’t stand a chance. But I love the inclusiveness of it. For a couple of months—let’s say, from Aug. 31 when the Venice Film Festival opens until maybe late November, when Oscar voters start fretting about shortlists—anything is possible. You could win the Kewpie doll! Heck, Nightmare Alley was picking up prizes on the front-end. At least it ended the season as an Oscar nominee, which is more than can be said for several hundred rivals. But I say this with love. The carnival atmosphere is a good thing. For a couple of months, we screen, and stream, and share the delicious illusion that the very next film we … [Read more...] about Step Right Up! As The Film Awards Season Opens, Everyone Is A Winner
Raksha Bandhan Day 2 Box Office Collection: Akshay Kumar’s Film Fails To Impress Cinegoers
Along with Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha , Akshay Kumar's family entertainer Raksha Bandhan also hit the theatrical screens on Thursday (August 11). However releasing on the holiday of Raksha Bandhan, the Aanand L Rai directorial got a disappointing start at the box office. Raksha Bandhan minted Rs 8.20 Crore on Day 1. Akshay's earlier releases Bachchan Paandey and Samrat Prithviraj had opened at Rs 13.25 Crore and Rs 10.70 Crore respectively at the box office. According to reports, while Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha had an upper hand in the multiplexes, Raksha Bandhan fared slightly better than it in the single screens. Talking about its performance on its second day of release, the Akshay Kumar-starrer collected Rs 6.40 Crore on Saturday. The total two-day box office collection now stands at Rs 14.60 Crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on his Twitter handle, "#RakshaBandhan declines on Day 2... Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well,’ Kendrick Lamar Short Film Eligible for 2023 Oscars
Short films by both Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar have qualified for the Academy Awards ’ best live action short category. According to the Hollywood Reporter , Swift’s All Too Well: A Short Film , written and directed by the singer, gained eligibility because it screened Nov. 2021 at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square; the window for eligibility in the live action short category for the 2023 Oscars runs from Oct. 1, 2021 to Sept. 30, 2022. Lamar became eligible for the category when he quietly screened a six-minute video for his Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers track “We Cry Together” — a song and visual that featured actress Taylour Paige — at Los Angeles’ Laemmle Royal Theater in June. THR writes that the We Cry Together , which starred Lamar and Paige, only showed once a day during the weeklong screening, with each showing largely occupied by friends and family of the rapper, though a very limited number of fans were permitted into each showing; … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well,’ Kendrick Lamar Short Film Eligible for 2023 Oscars
Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well’ Short Film Qualifies for Oscar Consideration
Getty Taylor Swift may be making a run at an EGOT, because she's apparently gunning for an Oscar during this award season ... all over her short film, which qualifies. The singer's 14-minute video treatment -- which is part music video and film, starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien -- is eligible to be nominated for an Academy Award at the 95th annual ceremony next year ... in the Best Live Action Short, no less, according to THR . The outlet reports TayTay and co. are actually consulting with a firm to guide the awards campaign -- so yeah, it seems she/the team behind the film do, in fact, want it considered. There's more though ... THR says the short film might've actually been up for Best Picture, technically, had it come out in 2022 -- but because it was released in late 2021, it misses that window ... although, Best Short is still in play. 'ATW' was screened in an AMC theater in Lincoln Square for a week straight last year, and because of that ... … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift’s ‘All Too Well’ Short Film Qualifies for Oscar Consideration
Buzzy Locarno Title ‘Tommy Guns’ Wins Europa Cinemas Label Prize
Portuguese filmmaker Carlos Conceição’s Angolan War of Independence drama Tommy Guns has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film at the 75th Locarno Film Festival , running August 3 to 13. The feature explores the war through the eyes of two youngsters – a local girl and a Portuguese soldier – who are caught up in the conflict. Under the award, the film will receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network – representing more than 1,200 theatres in Europe and other territories – with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen. “Carlos Conceição’s Tommy Guns was an absolutely unanimous choice for us as winner of this year’s Europa Cinemas Label here in Locarno,” said the jury. “We have decided to award this very personal and original film with a plot twist that took us completely by surprise, making us reconsider the whole story until that point through a new perspective. “The movie is referring to the … [Read more...] about Buzzy Locarno Title ‘Tommy Guns’ Wins Europa Cinemas Label Prize
“Life Is Like A Golgappa”: How Aamir Khan’s ‘Forrest Gump’ Adapts Tom Hanks Hit For Indian Audiences
Bollywood legend Aamir Khan is set to debut his version of the hit film Forrest Gump , with some differences specially designed for Indian audiences. Khan told the BBC that Forrest’s line, “Life is like a box of chocolates,” has become, “Life is like a golgappa; your stomach feels full, but your heart always craves for more.” Khan explained, “Golgappa is like a street food that we have win Indian and it’s very popular for being the kind of food that if you eat one, you don’t feel like stopping. It was quite well adapted.” And Forrest’s famous park bench where he shares his life story and his philosophies has been exchanged for a train setting. Khan told the BBC, “In India, it’s a little difficult to sit on a park bench and have a conversation, it’s rather noisy and crowded. So we couldn’t imagine sitting it at a bus stop. In India, trains are the most used form of transport, and it’s very common for passengers to exchange stories on a long journey, so that’s how we set the … [Read more...] about “Life Is Like A Golgappa”: How Aamir Khan’s ‘Forrest Gump’ Adapts Tom Hanks Hit For Indian Audiences
Rajjo Movie Review – Has Kangna Ranaut Lost It?
Rating: 1.5 /5 Oh-ho Rajjo !!! Wonder what was director Vishwas Patil thinking! Rajjo , starring Kangna Ranaut and newcomer Paras Arora is depressing, loud and pathetic to say the least! With abusive language and scenes that test your patience, Rajjo is one of the most badly made films in recent times! Was Kangna Ranaut desperate for work or was she offered heaps of money...? Not sure what tempted this talented actress to take up a film such as Rajjo ! Whether it be dialogues, acting or screenplay - Rajjo unfortunately has nothing new to offer. Agreed that the script is not novel, but that certainly cannot be an excuse! The plot definitely had scope for innovation, but Vishwas Patil chose to follow the most tried and tested path. Few of the dialogues make you wonder whether you are supposed to laugh out loud or tear your hair in despair! For instance, when Rajjo (Kangna Ranaut) walks with a matka on her head, dressed in a small … [Read more...] about Rajjo Movie Review – Has Kangna Ranaut Lost It?
‘Rust’ Gun Could Not Fire Without Trigger Pull, FBI Report States
Contradicting Alec Baldwin’s prior claims, the FBI forensic report on the Rust fatal shooting case claims that the gun used in the accident could not have been fired without pulling the trigger. Baldwin, the film’s producer and lead actor, shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set last year. He said he believed he was handling a “cold gun” without live ammunition. However, when the gun fired, a live bullet struck Hutchins, killing her. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also wounded in the shooting. The FBI’s accidental discharge testing determined that .45 Colt (.45 Long Colt) caliber F.lli Pietta single-action revolver needed a trigger pull to fire. With the hammer in the quarter- and half-cock positions, the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger,” the report stated. It added that the gun could not detonate “without a pull of the trigger when the hammer was struck directly.” Such response is normal for this type of revolver, the report … [Read more...] about ‘Rust’ Gun Could Not Fire Without Trigger Pull, FBI Report States
