By Margot Roosevelt | [email protected] | Orange County Register PUBLISHED: July 24, 2018 at 10:43 am | UPDATED: July 24, 2018 at 9:21 pm Not far from Newport Coast’s glittering enclaves, Fullerton’s tidy subdivisions, Disneyland’s fantasy rides and Irvine’s corporate towers lies another Orange County. Consider these snapshots: Poverty among Orange County children has risen by 24 percent since 2010, according to the U.S. Census. Factoring in the cost of living, 1 in 4 local children is poor. … [Read more...] about Orange County portrait: Low wages, child poverty, costly housing

She explained that she was more accustomed to fitful nights parked on the street, staying half-awake so she could be alert to potentially being approached by strangers or rousted by police officers. Members of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church were initially concerned about the possible risks of opening up their parking lot to down-and-out strangers. But talking to the mother and daughter reassured Nishibayashi that their congregation had … [Read more...] about For homeless people living in their cars, Southern California churches, temples open their parking lots
