As part of Deadline x Rolling Stone, a special issue of our AwardsLine print magazine dedicated to music in cinema, Noel Murray runs through the 20 Best Oscar music moments. For most of the history of the Academy Awards, the musical numbers have been at once glitzy and sappy, featuring fresh-scrubbed young dancers in spangled costumes, spinning and kicking behind a couple of old Hollywood stars. But every now and then, amid all the schmaltz, the producers of the Oscars telecasts have set aside some airtime to showcase some of the best singers and the snappiest songs of their eras. MONDAY UPDATE: With Sunday actuals tallied, Disney / Marvel ’s Avengers: Endgame has rocketed even higher than the record-smashing estimates we saw yesterday. Through Sunday, the Anthony and Joe Russo -helmed giant collected $866M at the international box office , topping the already colossal $859M projection. Although domestic numbers won’t be confirmed until midday Pacific time, they are on the upswing and help snap Endgame ’s global debut to $1.222B . With the updated figures, the 22nd MCU movie overtakes Iron Man 3 as the No. 17 film ever on the worldwide charts — after just five days in release. In China today, Endgame is estimated to have assembled another $18.2M ahead of a four-day extended break that begins Wednesday. This is not included in the totals above. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Rests At $357M+ Opening Record; Eyes $33M+ Monday & Record $180M 2nd Frame; Weekend Biz Hits $401M+ High
FINAL UPDATE, Monday PM: All numbers are in, and Disney / Marvel ’s record domestic weekend moola marathon for Avengers: Endgame will settle at $357.1M . Disney called the weekend at $350M, but when you’re dealing with such high numbers and records, you don’t want to walk any money back on Monday. The rest of the town knew it was north of $354M on Sunday morning. Today we hear that Endgame is poised to make $33M-$35M which is awesome and easily the third best Monday of all-time, behind Black Panther ‘s all-time Presidents Day haul of $40.15M and the first Monday after Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($40.1M). Fandango reported earlier this morning that the crazy presales haven’t stopped . Betty Thomas To Receive DGA’s Robert Aldrich Award; Special Service Awards To Brian Frankish & Joyce Thomas
Trailblazing director Betty Thomas will receive the DGA ’s prestigious Robert B. Aldrich Award for her “extraordinary service to the guild and its members” at the 73rd Annual DGA Awards. Veteran UPM Brian E. Frankish and longtime CBS operations’ associate director Joyce Thomas will receive special awards for their service to the guild and the industry. The awards show will be held on April 10, but the DGA isn’t saying yet whether it will be virtual or not. All three recipients have long histories of service to the guild. Betty Thomas serves as the DGA’s secretary-treasurer – the guild’s second-highest elected officer. “Betty means so much to our guild,” said DGA president Thomas Schlamme . “No matter how busy she’s been throughout her remarkable, ceiling-shattering directing career, she’s always placed service to her fellow members among her highest priorities, fighting for their creative and economic rights. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Passes ‘Titanic’ To Become #2 Film Ever Worldwide With $2.189B – International Box Office
2ND SUNDAY UPDATE, writethru after 8:14AM post : With an estimated $2,188.7M global through Sunday, Disney / Marvel ’s Avengers: Endgame has sailed past Titanic to become the No. 2 movie ever worldwide. The same goes for overseas where Endgame is also now No. 2 with a running cume of $1.569B . That’s after grossing a further $282.2M at the international box office in the sophomore session. Both globally and offshore, Endgame is still led by only Avatar . We earlier noted that Endgame was on its way to passing $2B global through Saturday, becoming only the fifth movie ever to hit that lofty benchmark (and Disney’s third). The 22nd MCU pic is now the fastest ever to the milestone — in just 11 days. Avatar , the previous record holder, did it in 47. With the Sunday estimates, there is now about $459M separating Endgame from Avatar overseas and roughly $600M worldwide.
