Pac-Man Live-Action Pic In Works From Wayfarer Studios, Bandai Namco
Wayfarer Studios and Bandai Namco Entertainment have partnered to develop a live-action Pac-Man film based on the classic arcade game franchise, Deadline can confirm. Released by the Japanese video game company Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. (formerly Namco) back in 1980, Pac-Man has a player controlling the yellow orb of the same name, as he winds through a maze in an effort to chomp up dots, while being chased around by four differently colored ghosts. The character has previously spurred the creation of two television series—the Saturday morning cartoon Pac-Man from Hanna-Barbera, which aired on ABC from 1982-1983, and the CG animated series Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures , which debuted on Disney XD in 2013. The new Pac-Man pic stems from an original concept from Lightbeam Entertainment’s Chuck Williams ( Sonic the Hedgehog ), who will produce with Tim Kwok for Lightbeam, along with Justin Baldoni, Manu Gargi and Andrew Calof on behalf of … [Read more...] about Pac-Man Live-Action Pic In Works From Wayfarer Studios, Bandai Namco
WGA Wins $42 Million “Self-Dealing” Arbitration Against Netflix
The WGA said today that it has prevailed in a huge “self-dealing” arbitration against Netflix that it says will result in hundreds of writers on more than 100 Netflix theatrical films receiving an additional $42 million in unpaid residuals. The WGA West and the WGA East say they now are pursuing about $13.5 million in interest that Netflix reportedly owes writers for late payment of these residuals. In a notification to their members, the guilds said that their victory stems from “an important arbitration over Netflix’s underpayment of the writer’s residuals for the theatrical motion picture Bird Box . Netflix argued the WGA should accept a substandard formula the company negotiated with DGA and SAG-AFTRA. After a hearing, however, an arbitrator determined differently — that the license fee should have been greater than the gross budget of the film. He ordered Netflix to pay the writer a total of $850,000 in residuals along with full interest of $350,000.” “As a … [Read more...] about WGA Wins $42 Million “Self-Dealing” Arbitration Against Netflix
RS Recommends: Four Tablets We’re Using for Reading, Gaming and Getting Work Done
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. If you haven’t spent very much time with a tablet, it can be hard to figure out where it fits in your tech life. Is it a larger version of your phone, or a smaller, more portable version of a laptop? The truth is, depending on your needs, a tablet can be either (or both!) A tablet’s flexibility is its best asset. If it’s paired with “professional” accessories like a stylus or keyboard, it can be used for writing or sketching. When used on its own, a tablet is basically a large screen for web surfing, video streaming and gaming. It may seem redundant, but a tablet can slowly take over certain tasks that you used to do on your smartphone or computer. You may even begin to favor it over either device for certain tasks like photo editing, or reading and responding to e-mails. We’ve rounded up some of the most popular and versatile tablets … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: Four Tablets We’re Using for Reading, Gaming and Getting Work Done
‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ Secures China Release Date
China has set an August 19 release date for Universal / Illumination ’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru . This will be the first major tentpole from Hollywood to hit the market since Universal’s own Jurassic World Dominion which has grossed $157.4M there through Sunday and during an extended nine-week run; it is the biggest studio import of 2022. The Universal Pictures Weibo account today posted the date for Rise Of Gru writing in part, “Long time no see, troublemakers! Get on the scooter, we’re back!” The Maoyan ticketing platform and the Douban reviews site are also carrying the date. (Check out the full-size China poster below.) The market’s box office was severely impacted earlier this year amid Covid spikes that forced lockdowns and restrictions, with Shanghai and Beijing hit hard. Dominion ‘s dinosaurs helped shake things up, and lately, local Chinese movies have seen a resurgence, including holdover sci-fi comedy Moon Man which grossed RMB 2B ($296M) … [Read more...] about ‘Minions: The Rise Of Gru’ Secures China Release Date
What the Hell Is Happening With Monkeypox?
If you happened to be scrolling through Twitter last week, you may have noticed #MonkeypoxIsAirborn trending. The hashtag revealed a fierce debate over the transmissibility of monkeypox , and what measures the general public should be taking to protect themselves against an outbreak that on Thursday was declared a public health emergency . Shortly after it began trending, Twitter pulled the hashtag from the “What’s Happening” sidebar. A representative from the platform told Rolling Stone that the trend was “temporarily removed” for review, and that Twitter is working with “public health authorities, NGOs and governments, and other authoritative sources to elevate credible info and add context to content across the service” in order to curb the spread of misinformation on the platform. But it wasn’t just this one instance. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, social media has come under intense scrutiny for the role that it plays in disseminating potential … [Read more...] about What the Hell Is Happening With Monkeypox?

Chelsea Handler Gets Netflix Talk Show
Chelsea Handler has lined up her next TV gig and it is the one she’d wanted all along — a talk show on Netflix . After months of negotiations and speculation , the streaming service has announced a deal with the comedian that includes a talk show, to launch in early 2016, as well as stand-up special and four docu-comedy specials. Like her E! late-night show, which will end its seven-tear run on August 26 , the Netflix talker will feature Handler’s unfiltered opinions on topics of the day as well as guest interviews. It has not been determined yet what frequency the show will be released with — daily, weekly or in between — with Netflix only noting that it will debut simultaneously in all Netflix territories. “The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler , Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late-night part….” said Netflix … [Read more...] about Chelsea Handler Gets Netflix Talk Show
Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
As Netflix continues to expand internationally, Ted Sarandos said he’s got sights on offering as many as 20 original scripted series per year as he sat in conversation with Netflix-friendly creators Vince Gilligan ( Breaking Bad ) and Mitch Hurwitz ( Arrested Development ) on Wednesday at NATPE . “I think we can launch — successfully, high quality — around 20 original scripted shows a year, which means every 2 1/2 to three weeks you’re launching a new season or a new show on Netflix meant to be for really diverse tastes all around the world,” he said. The question came in reference to Netflix’s recent original series Marco Polo , a $90 million production that drew mixed reviews but, he said, played extremely well overseas. “The launch and completion rates were comparable with Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards , and more than that it’s happening around the world at the same time,” Sarandos said. “The season 2 pickup was based on that performance.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
