When Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998, his sons Jonah and Justyn became heirs to their father’s estate. That meant joining with surviving Beach Boys founders Mike Love , Brian Wilson , and Al Jardine to vote on key business decisions, from archival releases to commercials. It wasn’t easy. “The dynamic changed a lot after our father passed,” says Jonah, who was in his late twenties at the time. “Not to say it was all negative, but we had a lot of challenges.” Adds Justyn, “In the beginning, it was just trying to navigate a very complicated group of individuals.” These days, Carl’s sons are more optimistic. FDA And CDC Recommend Pausing Johnson & Johnson Covid Vaccine During Investigation Of Reports Of “Extremely Rare” Blood Clots
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are recommending a pause on the Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine after reports of what the agencies characterize as an “extremely rare” blood clot. The FDA and the CDC will review “six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine,” out of 6.8 million doses administered, according to a statement from Peter Marks, the FDA’s director, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC. “FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. ‘Fortnite’ Maker Epic Games Raises $1B From Sony And Others, Claims $28.7B Valuation
Epic Games , the company behind Fortnite , said it has raised $1 billion in new funding and has reached a valuation of $28.7 billion. The fundraising round includes another $200 million strategic investment from Sony Group Corp., as the Japanese conglomerate renamed itself recently. Sony last summer had put $250 million into the privately held gaming concern. Other investors include Appaloosa, T. Rowe Price, KKR, AllianceBernstein, Altimeter, Luxor Capital, and funds and accounts managed by Fidelity and BlackRock. Epic has a single class of common stock, and founder and CEO Tim Sweeney remains the company’s controlling shareholder. EXCLUSIVE: Kelly Marie Tran has come aboard as an executive producer on Summertime , reuniting her with her Raya and the Last Dragon director Carlos López Estrada on his spoken-word poetry feature film that world premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Good Deed Entertainment has distribution rights to the pic, which will now get a July 9 release date in select Los Angeles and New York movie theaters before expanding a week later. Inspired after attending a spoken-word workshop featuring 20-plus high school performers from the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Get Lit, Estrada proposed a collaboration to develop the performers’ work into a loose, interconnected narrative, allowing the young poets to express themselves and their relationship to the city in an authentic way onscreen. The Rolling Stones had hinted at the possibility of a few surprises on their "50 and Counting" tour, and they produced one last night when Tom Waits joined them onstage to sing "Little Red Rooster" at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The rockers dug into the blues classic, which appeared on their 1965 album The Rolling Stones , Now!
