The new HBO mystery miniseries Mare of Easttown begins with establishing shots of its titular location in southeastern Pennsylvania. The sky is gray. The little houses, most of them built out of worn red brick, all sit on top of one another. Any paint in sight is faded and peeling. It is a depressing place, full of depressing people. When a newcomer tells Mare Sheehan herself ( Kate Winslet ) that the area seems OK to him, she replies, “Give it time.” You cannot accuse Mare of Easttown of false advertising, that’s for sure. The tone of the show is as dour as those early glimpses of its setting, to the point where it can be unnerving in the rare moments where someone briefly smiles or, somehow, some way, laughs. Created by Brad Ingelsby (whose Ben Affleck movie The Way Back was also quite glum) and directed by Craig Zobel ( The Leftovers ), the series is well-acted and can at times be gripping, but it seems happiest when it’s wallowing in the suffering of Mare and everyone … [Read more...] about ‘Mare of Easttown’: Kate Winslet Takes a Bite Out of Crime

FDA And CDC Recommend Pausing Johnson & Johnson Covid Vaccine During Investigation Of Reports Of “Extremely Rare” Blood Clots
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are recommending a pause on the Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine after reports of what the agencies characterize as an “extremely rare” blood clot. The FDA and the CDC will review “six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine,” out of 6.8 million doses administered, according to a statement from Peter Marks, the FDA’s director, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, and Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC. “FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution,” they said. “This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment … [Read more...] about FDA And CDC Recommend Pausing Johnson & Johnson Covid Vaccine During Investigation Of Reports Of “Extremely Rare” Blood Clots
Inside the Ambitious Plan to Monetize the Beach Boys’ Legacy
When Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998, his sons Jonah and Justyn became heirs to their father’s estate. That meant joining with surviving Beach Boys founders Mike Love , Brian Wilson , and Al Jardine to vote on key business decisions, from archival releases to commercials. It wasn’t easy. “The dynamic changed a lot after our father passed,” says Jonah, who was in his late twenties at the time. “Not to say it was all negative, but we had a lot of challenges.” Adds Justyn, “In the beginning, it was just trying to navigate a very complicated group of individuals.” These days, Carl’s sons are more optimistic. They recently came together with the founding members to make a major decision: The band has sold a controlling interest in the Beach Boys’ intellectual property — including their master recordings, a portion of their publishing, the Beach Boys brand, and memorabilia — to Iconic Artists Group, a new company run by longtime music business power player Irving Azoff . … [Read more...] about Inside the Ambitious Plan to Monetize the Beach Boys’ Legacy

Additionally, the state will convene the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup to review the information provided by the federal government on this issue. 60 U.S. Music Venues Are Getting ‘Turnkey Livestreaming’ Abilities
Live Nation and Veeps are outfitting 60 Live Nation-operated music venues across the U.S. with audio and visual tech to optimize livestreams, the concert giant and livestreaming startup announced on Wednesday. The move brings what the two companies are calling “turnkey livestreaming” to the venues, which will allow performing artists the ability to livestream a show while playing for an attending audience at the same time. Participating venues include the Wiltern in Los Angeles, the Fillmore in San Francisco and Philadelphia, the House of Blues in New Orleans and Chicago, and the Shoreline Amphitheater and Gorge Amphitheater in California and Washington. The Wiltern has already been outfitted for livestreams and hosted a few virtual concerts last year; it will host 10 more from artists, including Young Thug , Young M.A, and Freddie Gibbs from May to July, with tickets for the livestreams set for $15.
