Lawyer x the untold story
"John sees the humor in disconnects," says James Cromwell, who is among several Oscar nominees the show has enlisted for a series of short films starring Oliver's collection of wax presidents. He spent $13,700 to buy five of them from a now-defunct presidential wax museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 2018, he also purchased $76,000 worth of Russell Crowe movie memorabilia (including $7,000 for the leather jock strap he wore in Cinderella Man). In response, Crowe tweeted a video featuring Australia's beloved Irwin family unveiling the "John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward." Crowe financed it with the auction proceeds from Oliver. Oliver says Crowe's video "was comedically perfect — so structurally sound as a fuck-you because it raised awareness for a disease that is objectively funny, as appalling as it is for the koalas — and he actually did legitimate good. It's an almost shame-inducing perfect joke." … [Read more...] about Watch Out, America: John Oliver Is Officially a U.S. Citizen Now
Instead, Pizzolatto and co. apparently adhered to the British model, in which a season (or to use the parlance, “series” as in “Series 2 of a show”) is usually relegated to a scant four, or six, or eight episodes — with a Christmas special thrown in if it’s really good — and then boom, that’s it. Looking back, it’s now hard to think of True Detective being stretched out to 13 or 22 episodes; this is a story meant to be told in compacted form, one which allows for a high density rate of information and tangents yet still favors the forward momentum of the mystery. (It also still managed to find time for a bum episode as well.) Plenty of shows have done wonders with longer runs. But the shorter run helped this self-contained pulp fiction sustain a level of concentrated storytelling that played in the show’s favor while slicing away narrative fat. In the long run, less may very well have allowed the show to be more. … [Read more...] about 5 Things We Learned From ‘True Detective’
The Mifsud story was always bizarre. The professor introduced Papadopoulos, who’d been with the Trump campaign for about 10 minutes at that point, to a “beautiful” Russian woman he said was Vladimir Putin’s niece. Putin doesn’t have a niece. The woman, Olga Polonskaya, worked for a Rome wine company. Mifsud denied any foreknowledge of the DNC hack or making “any offer” to the Trump campaign, while Papadopoulos denied speaking about Russia at all to Downer, who told still a different story from the other two. … [Read more...] about Five Questions Still Remaining After the Release of the Horowitz Report
By far the most popular topic of discussion, however, was how these women could have possibly convinced themselves they were signing up for a female-oriented wellness and empowerment group in the first place. No one went so far as to blame the women or accuse them of perpetuating their trauma — as journalists covering sensitive subjects like abuse and consent, we ostensibly knew better than that. Yet on days when the testimony was particularly brutal, the tenor of the discussions would come uncomfortably close. The branding, the nude photos, the seduction tasks, the sexually explicit collateral: Why would they agree to do these things? How could they have not suspected that the man they were being tasked to seduce, ostensibly as a sort of Abrahamic test of faith, was the one pulling the strings all along? How could this endless parade of smart, attractive, accomplished women so easily have given up their freedom and their bodies to this hairy, middle-aged guy who looked like an … [Read more...] about How NXIVM Was the Ultimate Wellness Scam
