If anyone deserves a sitcom, it’s Jo Koy. The definition of a working comic, the stand-up comedian tours constantly, hits all the late-night shows, and pumps out special after special, selling out theaters all the while. And yet, Koy has never been able to break out of his (presumably quite lucrative) rut. All he needs is that one big crossover star vehicle, a la Amy Schumer ( Trainwreck ) or Kumail Nanjiani ( The Big Sick ), right? Right?? That’s what Easter Sunday is clearly designed to be, and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Koy is going to be exiting that rut just yet. It may take place on the holiday in the title, but it could really be about any obligatory family gathering where you can’t eat until after church. (It’s why it doesn’t matter that it’s coming to a theater near you in August.) Culturally, the film is more specific, capturing the arguments, eccentricities, and lavish spreads of Filipino-American family life — also a common topic in Koy’s stand-up. ‘Worse Than the O.J. Glove’: The Dentist, the Love Triangle, and the Trial of the Safari Murder Mystery
DENVER, COLORADO — Dr. Larry Rudolph was always going to testify for himself. His lawyer wanted him to, but didn’t want Larry to appear rehearsed, like in the hokey TV ads for his dental practice back in Pittsburgh. His girlfriend, Lori Milliron, tells Rolling Stone she agreed that Larry should take control of what she calls a nearly six-year “witch hunt” by the FBI and federal prosecutors. “When I was still able to talk to him on the phone, before I was arrested,” she says, “I told him, ‘You need to get on the stand and tell your story.’ He was like, ‘I dunno.’” But the feds were recording last winter’s prison calls between the defendant and his hygienist, turned mistress, turned business partner, turned partner in crime. If Larry, a figure cut from Trumpian cloth, was going to beat the charges — that he killed his wife on safari in Africa, so that he could spend millions in life-insurance payouts to live large with Lori — then his legal strategy would require overcoming the … [Read more...] about ‘Worse Than the O.J. Girls’ Generation Marks Group’s 15th Anniversary With Comeback Single ‘Forever 1’
After a five-year hiatus, K-pop outfit Girls’ Generation is back with a brand new album, Forever 1 , released alongside its jubilant and carefree eponymous single. The new music marks the group’s seventh Korean-language album and coincides with the 15th anniversary of their debut single, “ Into the New World .” “Forever 1” is accompanied by a music video, which finds members Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun living the high life — flying on private jets, riding in limousines, being bombarded by paparazzi, DJing at clubs — while also performing together in tightly choreographed scenes on a cruise ship and a colorful parade float. The song’s lyrics alternate between a playful love song and a celebration of the group’s longstanding relationship with each other (“Girls, We are forever/Yeah, we are, We’re still forever one,” the girls sing on the chorus.) The single was written and produced by K-Pop hitmaker Kenzie , known for her repeated … [Read more...] about Girls’ Generation Marks Group’s 15th Anniversary With Comeback Single ‘Forever 1’
Girls’ Generation on Their Reunion: ‘It’s Just Fun To Get Together’
When Girls’ Generation made their debut back in 2007 with “Into the New World,” most members were under 18 and the K-pop industry was not nearly as prolific with group acts as it is now. Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun reached mainstream success with the release of “Gee” in 2009, which made Girls’ Generation a household name in South Korea . The group continued to grow in popularity in Asia and in 2011, they began working with Interscope Records to promote in the U.S. The next big shift came in 2017, the group’s tenth year, when members Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun left SM Entertainment — their longtime label, and now also home to Aespa and NCT — on the condition that the group would not officially disband. Over the past five years, there haven’t been many opportunities for fans to see Girls’ Generation all together, aside from social gatherings since the members maintain strong relationships with each other. But that’s over now: To mark … [Read more...] about Girls’ Generation on Their Reunion: ‘It’s Just Fun To Get Together’
