A case on Maan Karate, which was released earlier this month, has been filed in a Chennai city court. The film is being accused of showing the boxing game in a bad taste. A boxer has filed a petition against the makers of the flick and demanded for a ban on the film. Boxer J Krishnamurthy has alleged that Maan Karate shows the sports in the bad taste. Instead of promoting the sports, the Tamil flick discourage aspiring boxers. He wants the Tamil movie to be banned. "I understand the film is not based on boxing, but the sport has been extensively used in the film. They have disrespected the sport by making a caricature version of it on screen. I have filed a complaint with the city police commissioner requesting to ban the film," Krishnamurthy told IANS. "They have not even followed the rules of the sport. By portraying it in such poor light, a bad impression of the sport is left on aspiring boxers. I wouldn't mind if it was just for a scene, but most of the second half of the film is … [Read more...] about A Case Against Sivakarthikeyan’s Maan Karate

The Harm Done For White Men
Part of President Trump’s new immigration proposal is something called “patriotic assimilation.” It’s a euphemism for an immigrant entry exam that evokes the Jim Crow literacy tests used to disenfranchise black voters. One administration official told the Washington Post that green-card applicants would be required to pass an exam based on such everyday American household dinner topics as Thomas Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. That is a perplexing choice for the administration, given the timing. That letter, dated January 1, 1802, is the foundation of many understandings of the First Amendment when it comes to the separation of church and state. That is anything but what we saw this week, as their Republican allies in statehouses throughout the Midwest and South pushed through unconstitutional, misogynist and pseudoscientific restrictions on abortion. In my native Ohio, a child who is raped might not even know she is pregnant before … [Read more...] about The Harm Done For White Men
