Katherine Massey, Who Was a ‘Powerful Voice’ for Civil Rights, Killed by Buffalo Shooter
Katherine “Kat” Massey was a strong advocate for civil rights and education for Buffalo ’s Black community. On Saturday, white supremacist teenager Payton Gendron killed her and nine others while they shopped in a supermarket in their predominantly Black neighborhood. It was the deadliest mass shooting of the year in the United States. “We lost a powerful, powerful voice,” former Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant told The Buffalo News . One year ago, Massey (who also wrote for Buffalo Challenger and Buffalo Criterion ) penned a letter advocating for more federal regulation of firearms. She was spurred by the escalating gun violence in Buffalo and other major U.S. cities, along with the recent killing of the cousin of Erie County Legislator April Baskin. “There needs to be extensive federal action/legislation to address all aspects of the issue,” she wrote. “Current pursued remedies mainly inspired by mass killings – namely, … [Read more...] about Katherine Massey, Who Was a ‘Powerful Voice’ for Civil Rights, Killed by Buffalo Shooter

Bill Maher Laments About A Liberal World That Seems To Be Going Mad In ‘Real Time’ Takes
Bill Maher can’t understand what has happened to the world he once knew, as he lamented during Friday’s Real Time on HBO. Several times during the show, an exasperated Maher threw up his hands and questioned the craziness of life in these United States. Cases in point: “It used to be a liberal thing to be suspicious of defense contractors,” he said during a discussion of the decision to send $40 billion to Ukraine. Later, during a discussion about the kvetching over Elon Musk’s Twitter bid, “Free speech was important to liberals in this country at one time.” In his closing rant, he complained about “The audacity of it all,” noting it appears there are no lines that can’t be crossed, like running on stage during a live show (a la Dave Chappelle’s recent brush with a nut), or messing with Mike Tyson. “Who needs the metaverse when you can do whatever you want in real life?” Maher asked. He noted that 11 Walgreens and six CVS stores have closed in San Francisco in the … [Read more...] about Bill Maher Laments About A Liberal World That Seems To Be Going Mad In ‘Real Time’ Takes
Rob Moore Exiting As Paramount Vice Chairman
Robert S. Moore is leaving his post as vice chairman of Paramount Pictures, people briefed on his departure confirmed Friday. Those people said superiors at Viacom forced his departure after killing the proposed sale of a studio stake to China’s Wanda Group, a sale of which Moore was a strong advocate. It is has been widely rumored that Jim Gianopulos , who recently left his job as chief executive of the Fox studio , would take a role at Paramount; but Gianopulos, who has already enjoyed a tour as studio chief, seems an unlikely candidate for a No. 2 spot, and there was no immediate indication that Paramount chief Brad Grey was headed for the door. People briefed on the turmoil at Viacom said Gianopulos remains a contender for that company’s chief executive spot, recently vacated by Philippe Dauman, and then his short-term successor, Tom Dooley. Dooley had been a close corporate ally of Moore’s; but the Viacom board bypassed Dooley in its search for a new long-term chief. … [Read more...] about Rob Moore Exiting As Paramount Vice Chairman
