Jenny Slate is pretty memorable as an entitled dry-cleaning client twirling a chihuahua around her head in Everything Everywhere All at Once , but it’s her role as an animated shell with one googly eye that really captured attention this season. In Marcel the Shell with Shoes On , we’re given a full-length feature version of the character Slate co-created with director Dean Fleischer Camp back in 2010. Voicing Marcel and leaning into her improv skills to help cook up the comedy character’s quirky and poignant dialogue, Slate explains why she thinks Marcel’s miniature perspective has inspired so many, and why this gig suits her so much better than SNL ever did. DEADLINE: Years ago, you came up with the voice of Marcel when you and Dean and some friends were squashed into a hotel room at a wedding. What part of you was speaking through Marcel back then? Because doing voices can sometimes be about expressing a thing you wouldn’t normally say. ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”
After her animated film received an Oscar nomination today, Jenny Slate said she is completely overwhelmed. “I thought I’d be more energetic, but I’m really shocked,” she told Deadline. “I sort of felt like a bit smoothed over and I felt really calm … now I just can’t stop crying.” Marcel the Shell with Shoes On , which Slate produced and co-created, snagged an Oscar nomination today for Best Animated Feature category. Slate also voiced the title character. The film is based on the character of Marcel, who was created by Slate and director Dean Fleischer Camp for a digital short back in 2010. Slate said she had no idea Marcel would garner this much acclaim when she first voiced the small shell. “At that time I was kind of at a low point in my career and sort of felt like I had drained the reserves of my creativity,” she said. “But I have always been a person who generally felt connected to a hope that happy and extraordinary things might come my way.” RELATED: … [Read more...] about ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”

‘A Small Light’: Nat Geo Series About Dutch Woman Who Hid Anne Frank’s Family Doesn’t Address Who Betrayed Them
A Small Light , National Geographic’s limited series that depicts the Dutch woman who risked her life to shelter Anne Frank’s family from the Nazis, steers clear of pointing any fingers at the person (or people) who betrayed the family. The project from Grey’s Anatomy alums Joan Rater and Tony Phelan follows Miep Gies (Bel Powley), who agreed to hide her boss Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber) and his family during World War I. “Miep always said we are never going to know [who betrayed them],” Rater told reporters Friday at the Television Critics Tour. “I’ll read one account and think, they did it , and then I’ll read a separate one and think, they did it. We felt it was important that we don’t answer that question. We don’t skirt it … we posit a person who could have. There were many people who could have [betrayed them].” Production on the limited series that will stream this spring on Disney+ occurred in Amsterdam and Prague, where Phelan says the production … [Read more...] about ‘A Small Light’: Nat Geo Series About Dutch Woman Who Hid Anne Frank’s Family Doesn’t Address Who Betrayed Them

We understand talks have commenced and decision over greenlight will be made by Ben Irving, who will take over as Interim Drama Director from incumbent Piers Wenger in May. Shuggie Bain producer A24 has hired Wenger and BBC Film Director Rose Garnett to oversee its international slate and for Wenger to sign off the greenlight would likely represent a conflict of interest.
