Jenny Slate is pretty memorable as an entitled dry-cleaning client twirling a chihuahua around her head in Everything Everywhere All at Once , but it’s her role as an animated shell with one googly eye that really captured attention this season. In Marcel the Shell with Shoes On , we’re given a full-length feature version of the character Slate co-created with director Dean Fleischer Camp back in 2010. Voicing Marcel and leaning into her improv skills to help cook up the comedy character’s quirky and poignant dialogue, Slate explains why she thinks Marcel’s miniature perspective has inspired so many, and why this gig suits her so much better than SNL ever did. DEADLINE: Years ago, you came up with the voice of Marcel when you and Dean and some friends were squashed into a hotel room at a wedding. What part of you was speaking through Marcel back then? Because doing voices can sometimes be about expressing a thing you wouldn’t normally say. JENNY SLATE : And … [Read more...] about ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Making A Moving Miniature Microcosm: “You Can Be Lost In It”

‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”
After her animated film received an Oscar nomination today, Jenny Slate said she is completely overwhelmed. “I thought I’d be more energetic, but I’m really shocked,” she told Deadline. “I sort of felt like a bit smoothed over and I felt really calm … now I just can’t stop crying.” Marcel the Shell with Shoes On , which Slate produced and co-created, snagged an Oscar nomination today for Best Animated Feature category. Slate also voiced the title character. The film is based on the character of Marcel, who was created by Slate and director Dean Fleischer Camp for a digital short back in 2010. Slate said she had no idea Marcel would garner this much acclaim when she first voiced the small shell. “At that time I was kind of at a low point in my career and sort of felt like I had drained the reserves of my creativity,” she said. “But I have always been a person who generally felt connected to a hope that happy and extraordinary things might come my way.” RELATED: … [Read more...] about ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”
Taliban Officials & Supporters Buy Blue Ticks On Elon Musk’s Twitter
Taliban officials and supporters have been buying blue ticks on free speech warrior Elon Musk ’s Twitter . According to a BBC investigation , at least two Taliban officials and four prominent supporters are currently using the service, which Musk took over in October. The likes of Hedayatullah Hedayat, the head of the Taliban’s department for “access to information”, and Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture head Abdul Haq Hammad, both have ticks and a combined 350,000 followers, which Deadline has verified. The former had his paid-for blue tick removed last month, according to local media, but it has now returned. Neither were verified as official accounts by Twitter’s pre-Musk system and the BBC also listed a number of prominent Taliban supporters who have recently acquired the blue tick. Prior to Musk’s Twitter takeover, ‘verified’ Twitter accounts were only given to “authentic accounts of public interest” but the blue tick system means anyone can pay $8 … [Read more...] about Taliban Officials & Supporters Buy Blue Ticks On Elon Musk’s Twitter

‘Poker Face’: “Endless Possibilities” For Natasha Lyonne’s Human BS Detector To Keep Solving Crimes Past Season 1
Poker Face , Rian Johnson ’s drama series starring Natasha Lyonne as a human bullsh*t detector, wasn’t conceived as a limited series and the Knives Out filmmaker said there are “endless possibilities” to continue in success. Lyonne stars as Charlie, an effortlessly cool, cheap beer drinking woman with a preternatural ability to solve crimes. After a casino boss seeks her out to use her abilities for nefarious purposes, Charlie goes on the run and gets mixed up in more crimes. Johnson says that it’s a “how to catch ‘em” rather than a whodunnit as the crime is front and center in each episode. But while there’s one story that arcs through the ten-episode season, one involving Benjamin Bratt’s security expert, it’s ostensibly a procedural. Lyonne said that she loved characters such as Peter Falk’s Columbo , Elliott Gould’s Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye and Dennis Franz’s Andy Sipowicz in NYPD Blue. Johnson added that he took inspiration from series … [Read more...] about ‘Poker Face’: “Endless Possibilities” For Natasha Lyonne’s Human BS Detector To Keep Solving Crimes Past Season 1
‘Saint Omer’ Takes Top Honors At 34th Palm Springs Film Festival
Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34 th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today. Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga (whose characters never interact, save for one momentous glance). By harnessing the skills of her technical team, Diop turns Saint Omer into a shrewd, cogent, ambitious, and overwhelming film which teases a metafictional awareness while remaining clear-eyed and unsentimental.” The Palm Springs festival took place from January 5-16 and screened 134 films from 64 countries, including 27 premieres. The lineup includes 35 of the International Feature Film Oscar … [Read more...] about ‘Saint Omer’ Takes Top Honors At 34th Palm Springs Film Festival

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey made an emotional return to the public eye on Monday night with a special honorary event organized by Italy ’s National Cinema Museum in the northern Italian city of Turin, attended by Deadline. VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society
Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society ’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 VES Awards , which were announced today. Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010. The hardware will be doled out at the 21st annual VES Awards on Wednesday, February 15, at The Beverly Hilton. Avatar: The Way of Water will vie for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — the category that hews closest to the Visual Effects Oscar — against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick , the film right behind the Avatar sequel on the 2022 list of top … [Read more...] about VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society
