‘Sons Of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter Makes Film Helming Debut On ‘This Beast’ For Blumhouse, Netflix

· March 8, 2021 ·

EXCLUSIVE : Kurt Sutter has been set by Netflix to write, direct and produce This Beast , a drama that will mark his feature directorial debut. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will produce the film along with Carla Hacken, who’ll produce under her Paper Pictures banner. An 18th century English village is besieged by a mysterious and elusive beast. Dozens of innocents are slaughtered and the mayhem is driven to puritanical heights by religious fanaticism. The impossible task of killing the beast falls to a lowly trapper who promises he can stop the carnage. But for him this hunt is not a professional mission, it’s a deeply personal one. The idea was inspired by The Beast of Gévaudan , a true story about a mysterious beast that terrorized a French village in the 1760s. “Bringing my disturbing, familial story sensibility into the Blumhouse world just seemed like something that had to happen,” Sutter said. And This Beast is the perfect project for that marriage. And Netflix … [Read more...] about ‘Sons Of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter Makes Film Helming Debut On ‘This Beast’ For Blumhouse, Netflix

Oscars: Todd McCarthy’s Top Picks For Best International Feature Nominations

· March 8, 2021 ·

The 15 shortlisted films vying to become one of the five Best International Feature nominees at the 2021 Academy Awards are a surprising and creatively engaging bunch. Their stories often are drenched in history — much of it tragic and disturbing — and turbulent social and political currents course through any number of them. Just four of the 15 were directed by familiar names so, for the most part, the filmmakers behind these works are in the early stages of their careers, which can only create optimism and excitement about what these up-and-comers will do in the future. Oscar nominations will be revealed on March 15. I’ve now seen all of the contenders and must say that it was, for the most part, stimulating to encounter so many fresh voices from some often little-heard-from realms of the cinematic world. Fewer than half of the semi-finalists come from countries typically thought of as regularly representing the cinematic front-rank — France, Iran, Denmark, Mexico, … [Read more...] about Oscars: Todd McCarthy’s Top Picks For Best International Feature Nominations

Leon Gast Dies: Oscar-Winning ‘When We Were Kings’ Documentarian Was 85

· March 8, 2021 ·

Leon Gast , the veteran filmmaker who won a Documentary Feature Oscar for helming the 1996 “Rumble in the Jungle” pic When We Were Kings , died Monday. He was 85. The news was confirmed by the Woodstock Film Festival, of which Gast was a founding advisory board member and a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award honoree. Gast also won a Spirit Award, a Sundance Special Jury prize and a DGA Award nomination for When We Were Kings, which he also produced and edited. It told the fascinating story about the 1974 heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The filmmaker later produced and directed The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013), which aired the following year on PBS as under the Independent Lens banner . Gast won a News & Documentary Emmy and an International Documentary Association Award for that project. Int’l Critics Line: Anna Smith On Chile’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘The Mole Agent’

· March 8, 2021 ·

An 83-year-old man goes undercover in a nursing home in The Mole Agent , Chilean director Maite Alberdi ’s Oscar hopeful that’s been shortlisted for both International Feature and Documentary. While it’s filmed and scored in the style of a playful spy movie, it’s most remarkable in its quieter moments, as the true heart of the story emerges. The Mole Agent is shot through Sergio’s spy glasses, more comes from the professional crew ostensibly filming a straightforward doc about the care home — as far as we know, no staff or residents know Sergio’s real reason for spending three months there. Like many a good cover story, his is credible because it’s rooted in reality. He’s grieving his wife, and much as he loves his grown-up children, he could use new company and a change of scene. The Mole Agent is a particularly compelling piece of cinema.
