Cassandra Peterson – or Elvira , as she’s known to most – is an enduring pop culture icon who has existed in our collective consciousness for 40 years. Yet behind the costume, her story is a moving and wildly entertaining tale of navigating the unpredictability of life as a performer. From her pre-fame days as a teenage showgirl in Vegas (where she dated Elvis Presley), her stint as a singer in a rock band in Italy, to eventually finding fame where she least expected it – with her character Elvira in the 1980s – Peterson’s journey has been a long and winding road. On the cusp on the Australian release of her autobiography and her casting in the new Rob Zombie feature adaptation of The Munsters , we sat down with “The Queen of Halloween,” to talk about her autobiography, Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of The Mistress of The Dark , her life, career, and the importance of never, ever giving up. In your book you mentioned you felt like a misfit when you … [Read more...] about Cassandra Peterson, Elvira: Mistress of The Dark, Urges Us to Never Give up On Our Dreams

Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. The climate crisis is real. The statistics are grim. The hurdles are high. But if we learned anything from the recent vaccine development it should be that big things can happen when we all put our heads together, attack a common problem, and commit to making meaningful change. One easy change you can pledge to make is to walk the sustainable walk when shopping for shoes . Many titans of the footwear industry have probably earned a long walk of shame as shoe production accounts for a fifth of the fashion industry’s environmental impact and generates 1.4 percent of global carbon emissions annually. But nowadays, there are players like Allbirds and Rothy’s, as well as established giants like Adidas and Converse , who are thinking outside of the shoebox and making it easy to be green. A whole new world of vegan leather, bamboo … [Read more...] about Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability
RS Recommends: Sennheiser’s HD 400 PRO Studio Headphones Make Sure What Goes In Is What Comes Out
Audio product names usually contain an esoteric combination of numbers and letters. It’s easy to sound like an audiophilic elitist when asking someone whether they prefer, say, the MKH 8060 or the MKH 8070. But in the case of the Sennheiser HD 400 PRO headphones , the product name is at least somewhat illustrative. PRO is not an acronym—these are professional-standard studio headphones. This means a few things. First, although you don’t need to be a professional engineer to consider buying a pair, the audio quality, depth and transparency of the 400 PROs will significantly upgrade your studio set-up. Second, the 400 PROs are designed to be used in the studio (or your closest equivalent) and not on the go. The attached cable has a 3.5 mm jack plug (and a 6.3 mm adapter), so there’s nothing to stop you using them elsewhere. But open ear cups are integral to the design, meaning these headphones are not equipped to block out background noise. Third, the 400 PROs are … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: Sennheiser’s HD 400 PRO Studio Headphones Make Sure What Goes In Is What Comes Out
RS Recommends: The Best Canned Cocktails to Sip On-the-Go This Season
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. We all had our hot hard seltzer summer moment last year, and that was admittedly a great time to be a refreshing drink-in-a-can. While hard seltzer has cemented its place in our backyard coolers for now, we like to think of that trend as more a stepping stone to recognizing that you don’t have to sacrifice well-crafted flavors for portability. The best canned cocktails, or ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, have really stepped up their game in the past few years, offering surprisingly upscale spirits, and in some case replicating the taste of a freshly mixed drink to a T, all in an easy-to-carry package. There are more diverse offerings than ever, from margs and ranch waters, to even whiskey cocktails and gin-based bevvies. Whatever your libation, we guarantee that there’s a canned cocktail out there for you. You may think that … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: The Best Canned Cocktails to Sip On-the-Go This Season
‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ Review: Kickboxer’s Prison Memoir Is Punch to the Gut
There are boxing movies, there are jailbird dramas and there are hell-and-back memoir adaptations — A Prayer Before Dawn throws all three of these genres into a dingy cell together, forcing them to either make nice or beat each other senseless in a survival-of-the-fittest showdown. Thankfully, filmmaker Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Bosch-like take on Billy Moore’s autobiography of life in a Thai prison allows each of these distinct narrative types to eventually bleed all over each other, sometimes literally. Moore ( Joe Cole ) was a Liverpudlian ex-pat living in Bangkok, fighting amateur Muay Thai bouts. Locked up in 2007, Moore quickly found himself dropped into a world where he barely spoke the language, didn’t know the rules and couldn’t tell which direction the next fist is coming from. So he learned to rely on the kindness of strangers — notably a transgender convict named Fame (Pornchanok Mabklang) — the mercy of a gang led by a face-tattooed kingpin (Panya Yimmumphai) and … [Read more...] about ‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ Review: Kickboxer’s Prison Memoir Is Punch to the Gut
Kevin Gates Stuck in Jail After Judge Denies Bail
Rapper Kevin Gates better learn to get cozy in his cell because a judge just DENIED him bail ... meaning he'll remain behind bars. Kevin had a bond hearing Wednesday at the Bridgeview Courthouse in Illinois but the judge said no dice on bond in his weapons case. He'll remain at Kendall County Jail. It's unclear why he was denied bond. You'll recall the rapper came THIS close to tasting freedom in Florida after completing his sentence there for kicking a woman in the face at one of his shows back in 2015. But he was arrested on an outstanding warrant in the weapons case as he was being processed out of jail. Oops. … [Read more...] about Kevin Gates Stuck in Jail After Judge Denies Bail
Fox And NBCUniversal Upfronts Presenters Take Digs At Netflix And Disney “Paywall”
In today’s traditional doubleheader opening of the upfronts in New York, Fox and NBCUniversal execs took digs at the “ paywall ” strategy of Netflix and Disney, in the first of many salvos expected this week. Kicking off Fox’s mostly virtual event, ad sales chief Marianne Gambelli took note of the industry’s shift to subscription streaming in recent years. “Everybody is chasing subscribers” except for Fox, she marveled. Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks took it a step further, telling the ad-buying audience, “”We know that without you, we would just be Netflix.” Entertainment chief Charlie Collier built on those comments in his concluding segment. “Now, Netflix and Disney are coming” to ad-supported streaming, he said. “And what that means is that they can’t afford to build their paywall without your money.” Fox, as Collier and other execs repeated throughout the presentation, emphasizes free and ad-supported programming (though the afternoon did feature a brief plug … [Read more...] about Fox And NBCUniversal Upfronts Presenters Take Digs At Netflix And Disney “Paywall”
We Are Waiting on Zuck
If you happen to be wondering why it is that some of your favourite small and medium publishers are silent today, it’s because they are all #WaitingOnZuck. Kicking off today, the #WaitingOnZuck campaign is spearheaded by Decade of Action and is in direct response to last year’s News Media Bargaining Code, which was signed into law in February of 2021. The News Media Bargaining Code resulted in Facebook blocking news from local publishers as they continued to oppose the law, which would require designated tech platforms to strike commercial deals with Australian publishers that recognised the value of the content those publishers provided the platforms. Though Facebook ( Meta ) has indeed agreed to some commercial deals, they have refused to negotiate with most of Australia’s independent and small publishers. As the #WaitingOnZuck campaign explains, “this risks the slow demise of meaningful independent media in Australia which gives our industry its diversity.” Now, … [Read more...] about We Are Waiting on Zuck
