Box office is big news this week, not so much for its totals as for its totemic significance. Throngs will greet Top Gun: Maverick , but will kids join the grownups to see a nearly 60 year-old actor starring in a sequel to a 36 year-old hit? At the other end of the audience spectrum, will seniors conquer their torpor to catch the new Downton and even lure their kids – the movie is dubiously titled Downton Abbey: A New Era to motivate the youth quadrant. These are edgy days for an industry seeking clues to two big puzzles: Does a broad demographic truly crave a return to the cool comfort of their movie theaters? And, if so, what sorts of movies would best combat their streamer fatigue? In Los Angeles there’s one dark portent: The multiscreen Landmark Theater on Pico, long the cathedral of indie films, will shut its doors forever shortly after the opening of Downton Abbey . Charles S. Cohen, Landmark’s owner who is a dedicated film nerd – he owns 35 other … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: It’s Back To The Future For The Box Office If ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Hits Stratosphere

On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue
B ackstage at the Rolling Thunder Revue , Allen Ginsberg (who has just dedicated his book of First Blues to “Minstrel Guruji Bob Dylan “) asks the convener of these revels, these winds of the old days, “Are you getting any pleasure out of this, Bob?” The convener, who can use words as if they were fun-house mirrors when he’s pressed, fingers his gray cowboy hat and looks at the poet. The first he had ever heard of Allen Ginsberg and the kind of people he hung out with was in Time around 1958 while he was still a kid in Minnesota. (“I’m Allen Ginsberg and I’m crazy.” “My name is Peter Orlovsky and I’m crazy as a daisy.” “My name is Gregory Corso and I’m not crazy at all.” That had broken up the kid in Minnesota.) Now, here on the road with this hooting, rocking carnival of time present and time past, both perhaps present in time future, is Allen, who has survived serene and curious, in a business suit. “Pleasure?” Dylan finds the word without taste, without … [Read more...] about On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue
Eskil Vogt On ‘The Innocents’, Arthouse Cinema And ‘The Worst Person In The World’s Great Run
The Innocents , set in a semi-deserted, nondescript high-rise apartment, follows four lonely kids who find each other as well as mind-bending powers one summer, to lethal effect. The horror pic launched at Cannes last year and arrived Stateside last weekend via IFC Midnight in a limited theatrical plus digital release after playing New Directors/New Films. It’s the latest from Norway’s Eskil Vogt , who until recently was shepherding The Worst Person In The World , which he co-wrote with director Joachim Trier, on its stellar run including Oscar nominations for best original screenplay and best international feature. Vogt gravitates to complex characters with an inner life not always apparent on the surface. In his first film Blind , which premiered at Sundance in 2014, a writer losing her eyesight retreats into an elaborate and fascinating fantasy bubble. He spoke with Deadline about how fatherhood sparked the idea behind The Innocents , remarkable child … [Read more...] about Eskil Vogt On ‘The Innocents’, Arthouse Cinema And ‘The Worst Person In The World’s Great Run
Cobalt Blue Movie Review: Of Male Gaze For Another Male, Love And Longing; The Film Is Like A Painting
Rating: 4.0 /5 Star Cast: Prateik Babbar, Neelay Mehendale, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Neil Bhoopalam, Shishir Sharma, Anjali Sivaraman Director: Sachin Kundalkar The film Cobalt Blue had a quiet release on Netflix on April 2, 2022, after a delayed December 2021 date. Based on the 2006 Marathi book of the same name by Sachin Kundalkar and written and directed by him, the film is yet another intimate take on relationships that one is accustomed to seeing in the writer-director's work. It has signature beautiful visuals, too. Vincenzo Condorelli's cinematography works wonders, even if you are watching the film on a smartphone screen. ALSO READ: Pondicherry Movie Review In fact, Cobalt Blue plays on all the senses, visually beautiful and in music and sound, too, whether it's the locales or the sets, the close-ups of daily household chores, or food, the costumes, or the actor's faces and (sometimes nude) bodies. Cobalt Blue is a very intimate … [Read more...] about Cobalt Blue Movie Review: Of Male Gaze For Another Male, Love And Longing; The Film Is Like A Painting
Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. But Wilsey Was Never the Same After
As Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” recently demonstrated, sometimes it takes a while for a song to catch on and become a hit. Lizzo’s track exploded two years after release, and something similar happened over 30 years ago with Chris Isaak ’s “Wicked Game.” When Isaak’s Heart Shaped World was initially rolled out in 1989, it didn’t make much of an impact. Then, with an assist from director David Lynch, “Wicked Game” caught on and got released as a single in late 1990. Finally, in 1991, the song broke into the Top 10. That was all good news for Isaak, who finally became the star everyone had predicted years before. But it was a mixed blessing for Isaak’s lead guitarist, James Calvin Wilsey , who came up with the swoony guitar lick that ran throughout the Isaak-written song. After a tenure in the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, Wilsey and Isaak formed a rockabilly band, Silvertone, in 1980; by 1985 Isaak was the frontman and Silvertone became the name for his backup group, which … [Read more...] about Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash.
