Filmmakers Marie Perennès and Simon Depardon follow 10 groups of women around the country who are protesting about harassment, rape, femicide — and about the police response to these crimes. “Les flics” — aka the cops — are a silent force in this film, policing protests with grim faces. Former Australia cricketer Andrew Symonds passed away in a car crash on Saturday night. The two-time World Cup winner met with a road accident just outside of Townsville in his home state of Queensland. The 46-year-old was the sole passenger, police confirmed. The police statement said, “Early information indicates, shortly after 11 pm the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled. Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however, he died of his injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.” It must be noted that Symonds is the third former Australian cricketer to tragically pass away in 2022 after leg-spinner Shane Warne died from a heart attack in Thailand in March and former wicketkeeper Rod Marsh also passed away from a heart attack earlier this year. An undercover cop befriends a murder suspect in The Stranger , a taut Australian thriller in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. Written and directed by Thomas M. Wright ( Acute Misfortune ), it features excellent performances from Sean Harris and Joel Edgerton , who also serves as producer. The Stranger begins simply enough: two men strike up a conversation on a long bus journey. One is a loner, Henry (a perfectly-cast Harris), the other a new arrival in town, Paul (Steve Mouzakis). Paul needs a friend; Henry needs work. When Paul offers to introduce his new pal to his criminal contacts, Henry nervously accepts. Several times during the show, an exasperated Maher threw up his hands and questioned the craziness of life in these United States. Cases in point: “It used to be a liberal thing to be suspicious of defense contractors,” he said during a discussion of the decision to send $40 billion to Ukraine.
