HBO Max ’s cancellation of voguing competition series Legendary has not gone down well in the LGBTQ+ community. GLAAD has slammed the move, which came last week as part of a swathe of cuts and cancelations at the embattled Warner Bros. Discovery streamer. The series was fronted by MC Dashaun Wesley with judges including Leiomy Maldonado, Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, Megan Thee Stallion and Keke Palmer and was one of the most inclusive non-scripted series on television. “ Legendary raised the bar for inclusivity on TV programming on so many different levels, especially when it comes to celebrating Black and queer culture,” GLAAD noted. “While Legendary is unfortunately just the latest LGBTQ-inclusive programming to get canceled by their network this year, the creative team and Scout Productions prioritized uplifting unheard talent and voices and we’re hopeful that these types of stories are able to be told again.” It was one of a number of inclusive … [Read more...] about GLAAD Slams HBO Max’s ‘Legendary’ Cancellation

2023 Oscars: ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Earns Nine Nominations
At the start of awards season, Edward Berger ’s All Quiet On The Western Front was a lock for International, but few could have foreseen how much further it would go. Alongside that nomination, the German film is now also in the running for Best Picture, having made the shortlist for Sound, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Visual Effects and Cinematography. This grand haul follows its performance at the BAFTAs, where it gathered an astonishing 14 nominations in almost all major categories. As a result, the film joins Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2002) in second place to Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1981), which still holds the BAFTA record for nominations with 16. It’s a double-whammy that will surely prompt some second thoughts at Netflix: in a year that the streamer invested in some of cinema’s biggest names, one of its biggest critical hits is a foreign-language remake with no major stars, from a director best … [Read more...] about 2023 Oscars: ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Earns Nine Nominations

Oscar Diversity: Asian & AAPI Representation Turn Up Big In Nominations
Asian and Asian American Pacific Islander representation prevailed at this year’s Oscar nominations, fueled largely by A24’s indie event, Everything Everywhere All at Once with 11 noms . The breakthrough comes in the wake of Parasite ‘s 6 Oscar noms/4 wins in 2020, and Minari ‘s six Oscar noms/one win. Malaysian-born Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Best Actress Asian nominee for Everything Everywhere All at Once . Yeoh played Evelyn Wang in the film, an immigrant laundromat owner, who together with her husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan) battles across the multiverse for the soul of their daughter, Joy Wang ( Stephanie Hsu ). Diversity in the the Best Actress category has been slim throughout AMPAS history with Halle Berry the only winner. While hardly a dozen Black women were nominated for Best Actress, there have been just four Latina/Hispanic. Oscars: Deadline’s Pete Hammond Predicts All The Winners
Editors’ Note: This story was originally published Wednesday. OK, here’s the moment you have been waiting for. Or maybe not. My Oscars predictions. Although many of these categories are Sure Things (I will tell you which ones by noting them as we go along), a remarkable number of them are still up in the air, and I find myself torn between two contenders, sometimes even three. This is a remarkably fluid year for the Oscars, and it begins with a Best Picture race that is a nail-biter right down to the opening of the envelope. I have to confess I am not a big fan of the prediction game, unlike some other pundits who seem to live or die by this stuff. I am much more interested in writing about the behind-the-scenes machinations and the work itself rather than the mundane what’s up/what’s down/what’s gonna win/what should win. As this week progresses, the white noise of which names will be in those envelopes increases. That said, I know some of you will take this ballot and bet … [Read more...] about Oscars: Deadline’s Pete Hammond Predicts All The Winners
