The Real-Life Mob Families of ‘The Irishman’? Donald Trump Knew Them
Martin Scorsese’s new film, The Irishman, conjures up a lost world. It depicts an era when the Mafia was so powerful that it set off alarms in the Kennedy White House, and Scorsese even hints that organized crime was behind JFK’s assassination. But by the end of the three-hour-plus movie, the nostalgia fades and so does the pinkie-ring finery. Every made man Scorsese introduces to the viewer is snuffed out until all that’s left is Frank Sheeran (played by Robert DeNiro), a disheveled, wheelchair-bound ex-hit man who’s haunted by his memories. At the film’s end, a pair of FBI agents plead with Sheeran to talk about his victims, telling him there’s no reason to keep silent anymore because there’s no one left to protect. “Everybody’s dead, Mr. Sheeran,” one agent says. “They’re all gone.” Well, many still remember. One person who knew the real-life mob families that show up in The Irishman is President Donald … [Read more...] about The Real-Life Mob Families of ‘The Irishman’? Donald Trump Knew Them
Spider-Man Homecoming: What We Know
Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe closed its doors with Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man last year, but Phase 3 is here and there is a whole lot to look forward to. Though Ant-Man wasn't technically a part of Phase 3, it was very telling about the plans the studio has for their upcoming slate of films in that we are going to be getting a whole lot of new characters, some of which we have already seen and will be seeing a whole lot more of in the next few years. Captain America: Civil War officially kicked off Phase 3 of the MCU with a bang and though it was a Captain America movie at its heart, there was still time to introduce a few new characters, most notably Spider-Man. Yes, nerd dreams dating back to the earliest days of Marvel Studios have finally been realized and the studio was able to work out a deal with Sony to have your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man be part of the MCU. Those who have seen Civil War, which at this point seems to be just about everyone, know that … [Read more...] about Spider-Man Homecoming: What We Know
Official Blockbuster-Licensed Streetwear Pop-Up Shop Lands in New York: First Look
Dumbgood’s weeklong store swaps video rentals for merch sales, but don’t worry, there are plenty of VHS tapes on display. In an era of constant movie remakes and fashion trends inspired by the early 2000s, pop culture nostalgia is at an all-time high. But for film and TV buffs, few logos or brands are as memorable as Blockbuster’s blue and yellow ticket stub (call it a coincidence that Pantone’s recently announced 2020 color of the year is classic blue). Although almost all Blockbusters shuttered by 2014 — today, one lone store in Bend, Oregon remains — clothing label Dumbgood is resurrecting this millennial mainstay in a new, officially licensed streetwear collection. The line will be available at a Blockbuster pop-up shop in New York, running from Dec. 6 to 15. Walking into Dumbgood’s NYC pop-up in SoHo, shoppers are made to feel like they are stepping into the video rental store. Film posters and white shelves full of cult classic VHS … [Read more...] about Official Blockbuster-Licensed Streetwear Pop-Up Shop Lands in New York: First Look
What ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Star Thomasin McKenzie Learned From Working With Unconventional Auteur Taika Waititi
After appearing in Leave No Trace to much critical acclaim last year, Thomasin McKenzie came to Jojo Rabbit excited by the notion of learning from one of the industry’s most unconventional voices. In Taika Waititi’s World War II drama, centered on an avid member of the Hitler Youth (Roman Griffin Davis), McKenzie plays Elsa, a Jewish girl he finds hiding in his attic, who works to change his hateful worldview. While working with Waititi, the actress found dimensions in her character that weren’t at first evident. “There are so many ways to look at characters,” she says, “and that is the biggest thing I learned.” DEADLINE: You came to Jojo Rabbit after completing your first audition at a Los Angeles studio.
