The widow of a man wrongfully executed for murder seeks justice in all the wrong places in Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam’s Iranian drama. Adding another strong voice to the chorus of anti-capital-punishment films coming out of Iran is Ballad of a White Cow ( Ghasideyeh gave sefid ), a drama almost entirely centered on the wife of a condemned man who is wrongfully executed for murder in the opening scene. Played with huge amounts of feminine dignity by Maryam Moghaddam, who co-directed with Behtash Sanaeeha, the widow Mina is shown to be refreshingly capable of raising her deaf daughter on her own and navigating the minefield of a highly misogynistic society — and even (gasp) of finding love. But as hostility against Mina builds from her family, neighbors and the authorities, disaster looms and the story grows more suspenseful, teetering on the edge of melodrama. Fortunately, the realism of the acting and the classic, restrained camerawork keep things on a believable … [Read more...] about ‘Ballad of a White Cow’: Film Review | Berlin 2021

St. Vincent’s Family Ties
One of the last times Annie Clark went to see her father in a Texas prison, a fellow visitor asked her to autograph a receipt — the only paper they had on hand. “You can’t bring phones in, so you can’t take a normal selfie. I guess I’m glad that a selfie of me in there doesn’t exist,” Clark, 38, says. “I find it very darkly comic. It’s obviously very sad, but it’s also incredibly funny.” Clark saw her father taken away by the U.S. government in May 2010 for what she describes as “white-collar nonsense.” Over the next near-decade, she visited him in between releasing four albums of increasingly acclaimed art rock as St. Vincent . She performed with Nirvana at the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony … and was forced to go to Walmart more than once to buy XXL sweatpants when the prison deemed her clothing too tight for a visit. She won Best Rock Song at the 2019 Grammys … while the massive collection of books she brought for her dad to read behind bars was confiscated … [Read more...] about St. Vincent’s Family Ties

EMMYS: ‘Walking Dead’s Frank Darabont
Frank Darabont spent five fruitless years of pitching an idea for a zombie television series. But he’s back on Hollywood’s A-list after The Walking Dead , which he created from Robert Kirkman’s original comic book, generated higher ratings in its first season than any of AMC’s previous original shows. Now Darabont has two Hollywood Guild award nominations to go with his three Oscar nods for writing and directing The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile . He talks about his longtime love affair with the undead with Deadline TV Contributor Ray Richmond : DEADLINE: Are you such a fan of zombies because you work in Hollywood? FRANK DARABONT: Yes, there are plenty of zombies working in the industry. But I’ve always wanted to tackle the zombie mythos since I was a kid and saw Night of the Living Dead — the original black-and-white version — at a midnight screening. It was just a niche thing then. But I think in the past five years it’s become far more widely embraced. … [Read more...] about EMMYS: ‘Walking Dead’s Frank Darabont
