Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
As Netflix continues to expand internationally, Ted Sarandos said he’s got sights on offering as many as 20 original scripted series per year as he sat in conversation with Netflix-friendly creators Vince Gilligan ( Breaking Bad ) and Mitch Hurwitz ( Arrested Development ) on Wednesday at NATPE . “I think we can launch — successfully, high quality — around 20 original scripted shows a year, which means every 2 1/2 to three weeks you’re launching a new season or a new show on Netflix meant to be for really diverse tastes all around the world,” he said. The question came in reference to Netflix’s recent original series Marco Polo , a $90 million production that drew mixed reviews but, he said, played extremely well overseas. “The launch and completion rates were comparable with Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards , and more than that it’s happening around the world at the same time,” Sarandos said. “The season 2 pickup was based on that performance.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Trial Ends; Will Warner Bros Or Universal Cast Magic Sequel Spell?
The legal battle over whether production company Sweetpea Entertainment or toy giant Hasbro owns sequel rights to Dungeons & Dragons came has come to an end — at least for now. But the seven-day trial that wrapped late Tuesday in federal court in downtown LA did not end quietly. “Hasbro cannot have it both ways,” attorney Patricia Glaser said in her closing statement, calling out the company for disputing a 2010 D&D movie sequel but not a 2005 one and dragging her client, Sweetpea and its owner Courtney Solomon, into court. Noting the “tentpole opportunity” the production company has with Warner Bros , Glaser added, “only Sweetpea, not Hasbro, has the right to make a movie with Dungeons & Dragons as its primary title.” Of course Hasbro sees it differently, which is why they rolled the dice with its initial complaint last May . “Hasbro has a right to begin to make movies of its own based on the property,” said lawyer Jeremy Goldman in his closing before … [Read more...] about ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Trial Ends; Will Warner Bros Or Universal Cast Magic Sequel Spell?
Universal Loses Bid To Toss James Bond Copyright Suit From MGM & 007 Producer
The same day the case over who owns sequel rights to Dungeons & Dragons wrapped, the case over the alleged “ James Bond knockoff” received the go-ahead to continue. In a sealed order, a federal judge is denying the motion by Universal to toss the multi-claim copyright infringement Section 6 lawsuit from MGM and Bond producer Danjaq . The order, from Judge James Otero, was dated September 23 but filed on Wednesday. A July 28 hearing on the matter was vacated later that month by the court, and Otero made his decision based on the materials of the case so far. In their late May motion to dismiss the action, the Comcast-owned studio said MGM and Danjaq’s case was based on “threadbare allegations about hypothetical future infringement in works yet to be produced.” Otero obviously disagreed. We’ll know why when his order is unsealed. MGM and Danjaq’s initial April 3 complaint cited what they say are the remarkable similarities between their man with a … [Read more...] about Universal Loses Bid To Toss James Bond Copyright Suit From MGM & 007 Producer
Tom Cruise — Some of My Movies SUCK!
Tom Cruise fessed up during his deposition in his defamation case -- some of his movies should have gone straight to DVD -- or into the trash can. The lawyer for the magazine he's suing asked Cruise about the actor flying to a Scientology event while he was shooting a movie. Cruise testified at the time he was shooting "One Shot" in Pittsburgh. The attorney admitted confusion, saying he had never heard of the film and was surprised the studio would "throw away one of your films." Cruise then admitted, "They should. They should throw away a few of them." By the way, "One Shot" was retitled "Jack Reacher," which grossed $80 million domestically. So we gotta ask ... … [Read more...] about Tom Cruise — Some of My Movies SUCK!
Sam Mendes & Armando Iannucci Set HBO Comedy Pilot ‘The Franchise’ About Superhero Movie-Making
Armando Iannucci is staying in business with HBO and is teaming up with Sam Mendes for the ride. The Veep and Avenue 5 creator and the Oscar-winning director have scored a pilot order for comedy The Franchise at the premium cable network. The half-hour project takes a wry look at superhero movie-making. It follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, the question they must face — is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant? It comes after Deadline revealed that Iannucci’s space voyage comedy Avenue 5 may be coming to an end with its upcoming second season. The Franchise will be exec produced by Iannucci, via his Dundee Productions banner, and Mendes, via his All3Media-backed production company Neal Street Productions. The Oscar-winner Mendes, who hatched the idea, will also direct. Jon … [Read more...] about Sam Mendes & Armando Iannucci Set HBO Comedy Pilot ‘The Franchise’ About Superhero Movie-Making

Avenged Sevenfold Sued After Trying to Split From Warner Bros
California rock outfit Avenged Sevenfold have been sued by their label, Warner Bros. Records, after attempting to break their as-yet-unfulfilled contract by citing California’s “seven-year rule,” Billboard reports. Avenged Sevenfold have released four out of the five albums mandated by their deal, which was signed in 2004. Since then, according to a statement by the band’s lawyer, Howard E. King, the label has undergone “multiple regime changes that led to dramatic turnover at every level of the company, to the point where no one on the current A&R staff has even a nodding relationship with the band.” The “seven-year rule” the band has invoked is a section of the California labor code that stipulates a court cannot enforce a personal service contract after seven calendar years from when the deal began. But Warner Bros., in their breach-of-contract suit, dismissed Avenged Sevenfold’s invocation of the rule as unlawful and have demanded a trial in order to rule it … [Read more...] about Avenged Sevenfold Sued After Trying to Split From Warner Bros
