As its title suggests, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is a subversive delight. Unleashing a healthy serving of Dorothy Parker tinged satire, and lovingly pulling on the decades of network legal drama tropes, the Tatiana Maslany -led comedy from Rick and Morty vet Jessica Gao rapturously cavorts around the superhero genre, breaking the fourth wall and expectations. Now, addressing the audience here, is lifted from the comics where the character originated back in 1980. So, Deadpool and Fleabag fans, that’s true to the source material. There’s also a lot of high quality CGI, transparent deriding of City of Angels superficiality, and dating app rituals. Amidst all that, the overriding takeaway is She-Hulk is really funny – which might be exactly what we all need right now. The fact is humor has long been Marvel ’s secret weapon. Truly inaugurated by the genius of Robert Downey Jr’s insecure and simultaneously arrogant Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man , the … [Read more...] about ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’ Review: Verdict Is A Laugh-Out-Loud TKO For Tatiana Maslany’s Marvel Comedy

John Waters on the Truth About Lying and How He’s Avoided Cancel Culture
Filmmaker John Waters , the proud “Pope of Trash,” is no stranger to weird questions. But at a recent audience Q&A when someone asked him, “How did you avoid getting cancer?” he was flummoxed. “I thought, ‘I did smoke, I’m 76 — I guess it is a fair question,'” he says on a call from his home in Provincetown, Massachusetts. “I was explaining all this, and the audience starts laughing harder and harder. And then I realized I heard them wrong. They said, ‘How did you avoid getting canceled ?'” For nearly 60 years, Waters has violated the boundaries of good taste with satirical films like Hairspray and Pink Flamingos (recently rereleased by the Criterion Collection in honor of its 50th anniversary), and incisive books that take a closer look at America’s grimy underbelly. Now, the mustachioed misfit is taking on the concept of truth itself with his first novel, Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance , about a compulsive liar named Marsha Sprinkle. “I had a wonderful time thinking … [Read more...] about John Waters on the Truth About Lying and How He’s Avoided Cancel Culture
Australian Rugby Champ Ellia Green Becomes First Olympian to Come Out as Transgender Man
Ellia Green, a retired Australian rugby champ, made history as the first Olympian to come out as a transgender man. Green — who has kept his name — announced his transition in a video yesterday, Aug. 16, tied to the Bingham Cup, a biennial gay and inclusive rugby tournament. In the video, Green spoke about grappling with mental health issues as his rugby career drew to a close (he officially retired in 2021). He said that the “one promise that I made to myself is that when my rugby career ended, I would continue to live the rest of my life in the identity… in the body that I should have.” While Green was part of the Australian rugby sevens team that won gold at the 2016 Olympics , he wasn’t selected for the team for the 2020 Tokyo games (which were held in 2021 due to the pandemic). On top of the issues he was already dealing with, Green said not being picked made him feel “like a complete failure,” adding, “I really took it as a reflection on my whole self as a person.” What … [Read more...] about Australian Rugby Champ Ellia Green Becomes First Olympian to Come Out as Transgender Man
‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’: The MCU Takes on the Sitcom
Among the running gags of Disney+’s new Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is that its title character — a.k.a. Jennifer Walters, cousin to Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, who becomes big and green after their blood accidentally intermingles in a car accident — hates her own nickname. “It’s so dumb!” she complains. “I can’t even exist without being a derivative of the Hulk .” The comic-book version of She-Hulk has rarely had to worry about this. Despite the green skin and superstrength, she has occupied a relatively unique space within the Marvel universe. She is a Hulk who retains her own personality even when powered up(*). She is a lawyer whose specialty is cases involving other superheroes. Where most of her peers tend to treat their heroic identities as necessary evils they’d rather do without, she loves being the stronger, more confident, and more glamorous She-Hulk, and resents having to occasionally turn back to normal. And most importantly, she has largely been written as … [Read more...] about ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’: The MCU Takes on the Sitcom
Mariah Carey’s ‘Queen of Christmas’ Trademark Bid Criticized by Singers
Mariah Carey ’s application to trademark the title “Queen of Christmas” has been criticized by two festive singers. Carey , whose 1994 classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has earned her the unofficial title of “Queen of Christmas” from fans, filed an application to trademark the phrase in March 2021. The application was made public on 12 July, in which she requested to secure exclusive usage of the title along with “QOC,” “Princess of Christmas,” and “Christmas Princess”. Now, festive singers Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan have criticized Carey, with the latter going to court this week in an attempt to prevent claiming the title, according to Variety . Love sang several songs on 1963’s A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector , including the classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” while Chan exclusively releases Christmas music every year and even has an album called Queen of Christmas . Chan’s attorney filed a formal declaration of opposition to … [Read more...] about Mariah Carey’s ‘Queen of Christmas’ Trademark Bid Criticized by Singers
