Just about movies
From Deep In The MPA’s ‘Theme Report,’ Markers Of A Weird New Movie World
It’s a bizarre world, this (almost, more-or-less, maybe) post- Covid movie landscape. Pieces are falling into place: Production starts have been up for a year, box-office revenue continues to climb, though it’s still a long reach to pre-Covid highs. But so much is so different, and I don’t mean just the obvious shift toward streaming . Look closely at the Motion Picture Association ’s so-called “Theme Report” from two months ago—a statistical survey of the film business, compiled annually—and you can see the outlines of an industry that was leveled by disaster, and is growing back in ways that veteran observers might find unsettling, if not downright grotesque. Strangest for me is a near-obliteration of the older audience, a trend that finally be easing with the relative success of Downton Abbey: A New Era . Reasons for the wipe-out are clear enough: Those age 60 and above were deemed more vulnerable to coronavirus, so they abandoned theaters when the … [Read more...] about From Deep In The MPA’s ‘Theme Report,’ Markers Of A Weird New Movie World
How Ethan Coen’s Documentary on Jerry Lee Lewis Brought Him Back to Filmmaking
Ethan Coen wasn’t exactly a scholar on Jerry Lee Lewis . You wouldn’t even have called him a fan, really. Sure, the Oscar-winning filmmaker — who, along with his brother Joel, has given the world The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink and Fargo and No Country for Old Men and a dozen other movies that have earned rabid cults and regularly show up on Greatest Movies Ever lists — knew “Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.” Everybody does. He could probably sing a few verses of “Great Balls of Fire” in a karaoke emergency if need be. Press him, and Coen might name you some of his other early hits, like “High School Confidential,” “Breathless,” or “High Heel Sneakers.” And like most folks, he knew about Lewis marrying his 13-year-old cousin and the scandal that ensued, derailing the Killer’s early career and stopping his chart-topping reign dead in his tracks. Coen had also, by his own admission, “left the movie business” and wasn’t necessarily looking to throw himself into another … [Read more...] about How Ethan Coen’s Documentary on Jerry Lee Lewis Brought Him Back to Filmmaking
‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Pisses Off MTV with Anti-‘Jersey Shore 2.0’ Attack
TMZ/Getty The cast of "Jersey Shore" has done a lot for MTV -- but now, they've pissed the network off ... with a statement denouncing a new, younger version of the popular reality show. If you didn't know, MTV announced earlier this week it would be adding a revamped version of the classic, with an all-new cast, to the network's upcoming programming -- a cast in the age range of the OG "Jersey Shore" stars when they started out way back in the day. Clearly, that didn't sit well with The Situation , Snooki , JWoww , DJ Pauly D , Vinny , Deena or Angelina ... who all posted the same statement slamming the new show, saying, "... we are not in support of a version that will exploit our original show, our hard work and authenticity to gain viewers." We've spoken to high-level sources at MTV who say show and network honchos were not only blindsided ... they're PISSED, calling the cast "ungrateful" and saying, "It's … [Read more...] about ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast Pisses Off MTV with Anti-‘Jersey Shore 2.0’ Attack

According to Times Of India report, the wedding will be held in September. Talking about the wedding and engagement plans, Manish said, "Malika and I had been planning the wedding for the past year. Cannes Review: Riley Keough’s and Gina Gammell’s ‘War Pony’
It is more than a bit ironic in a Cannes Film Festival where Baz Luhrman’s biopic Elvis is one of the most anticipated entries, that the subject of it, Elvis Presley turns out to have another direct connection this year’s fest. His granddaughter Riley Keough is making her directorial debut with the Un Certain Regard selection, War Pony having its World Premiere today. The film focuses on two young Native Americans coming of age and trying to get by in a story set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It is a location that has intrigued other filmmakers like Chloe Zhao ( The Rider) in recent years, and now has caught the attention of Keough and her co-director Gina Gammell in order to tell an authentic and unique contemporary tale of Native American youth brought to life by an impressive group of first-time actors, mostly locals the directors cast in order to give this as fresh and real a feel as possible. They have succeeded. Hollywood has not always … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Riley Keough’s and Gina Gammell’s ‘War Pony’
Roger Ross William’s One Story Up Is A Powerhouse Production Company Giving Hope To BIPOC Talent — Deadline Disruptors
A few years ago, as filmmaker Roger Ross Williams contemplated founding his own production company, he experienced a Field of Dreams kind of vision: “If you build it, they will come.” The revelation took place far from the Iowa cornfields of the movie. “I was actually walking by this big, empty office space in Brooklyn,” Williams recalled, “and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a great office space. I should rent it to start my company.’ I thought that renting the office space would force me to fill it.” Fill it he did, first with edit bays, then with staff. One Story Up has become a thriving enterprise and one of the industry’s few African American-owned production companies. The company name doesn’t refer to a physical location, but to an idea. “I loved the word ‘story’ being in the name and lifting ‘up’. The two things: lifting up filmmakers of color and telling stories,” Williams says. “I said to myself, I need to use the production company as a vehicle for helping … [Read more...] about Roger Ross William’s One Story Up Is A Powerhouse Production Company Giving Hope To BIPOC Talent — Deadline Disruptors
Fashion Wunderkind Devon Ross Strikes A Pose In HBO’s ‘Irma Vep’ — Ones To Watch
Deadline’s annual group of Ones to Watch in Cannes is made up of actors and filmmakers who are all bringing something fresh to the festival. The distinction isn’t always reserved for brand new faces; rather, we’ve selected people who are branching out, or who find themselves in waters where they are liable to make waves. Cannes can be a place of reinvention, after all. With her no-fools-suffered , rock-chic attitude, Devon Ross looks like she’d be more at home in the Runaways than on a runway, but the 22-year-old has become one of the most sought-after models in the fashion world, representing Gucci, Mulberry and Valentino. And now she will make her acting debut. Directed by Olivier Assayas, working from his 1996 film of the same name, she appears in the HBO mini-series Irma Vep , which screens in the Cannes Premiere section and stars Alicia Vikander as Mira, an actress on the verge. “Mira’s a movie star, and she’s going to Paris to make a film called The … [Read more...] about Fashion Wunderkind Devon Ross Strikes A Pose In HBO’s ‘Irma Vep’ — Ones To Watch
