Nobody expected a whole lot from Clueless when it was released in July of 1995. It appeared on the surface to be yet another teen comedy, largely indistinguishable from the hordes of others Hollywood had unleashed over the years. But critics praised the movie, proclaiming it to be much smarter than it looked. Then audiences outside the core teen demographic started buying tickets for it, too, thanks to stellar word-of-mouth. In the end, the movie became a sleeper hit, evolving into a certified genre classic over time. Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, who loosely based it on Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma, Clueless made Alicia Silverstone a household name. She plays Cher, a popular, fashion-obsessed rich girl who joins together with best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash) to make over frumpy new-girl-in-school Tai (Brittany Murphy). The eternally optimistic Cher also finds love, in the form of her ex-step-brother Josh (Paul Rudd) By all accounts, everyone … [Read more...] about 16 Dark Secrets You Didn’t Know About Clueless

“The biggest challenge was coming up with an exciting design within the defined footprint we were given while still meeting the exhibitor’s programmatic requirements.” Paul Georges, one of our “Class of 2013” leaders last month and principal at JKR Partners in charge of Regal Moorestown Mall Stadium 12 & RPX, was speaking about the New Jersey town of the same name. But such prerequisites and requirements are certainly part of the groundwork for cinema design, construction and upgrades everywhere.Even in Hollywood, California. There is probably no better example—most certainly not one more creatively exciting and historically important—of working within a defined footprint, quite literally, than the world-famous TCL Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. (With all due respect for TCL’s sponsoring and financial support which have made all the latest improvements possible, this author will never, ever give up on the founding father’s … [Read more...] about Big and bold: From Hollywood’s restored Chinese to Santikos’ Palladium, new cinemas opt for spectacle

No matter how optimistic or pessimistic one is about what could happen between now and early January when Academy members must nominate five potential best pictures, it's clear that many pre-season assumptions that Hollywood handicappers made based on films' elements have not held up. Unfortunately, as films that looked like potential best picture contenders have opened this fall they've been shot down by critics and shunned by moviegoers. The result has got to be depressing for awards marketers whose high hopes for these titles are now in the deep freeze."Two or three months ago (one awards oriented Web site) published a list of like 40 movies that looked like they were of award-winning caliber," one awards voter told me last weekend. "Their pedigree was phenomenal. The content, the filmmakers and the actors (were all very promising). And, you know, I've seen every one except for 'Dreamgirls' and there's not one that stands out. It's going to be a really difficult year (to make … [Read more...] about Is awards race wide open or just short of contenders?
