Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades a t Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business. FLEMING : Could President Trump really be this tone deaf? After antagonizing the paranoid Sony-hacking North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he starts the battle that shook up football Sunday throughout the National Football League. It’s hard to imagine the president could be this blissfully reckless without an endgame, lecturing the league and its athletes about a lack of patriotism when players (mostly black) kneel during the National Anthem to protest inequality and police brutality. Then he says that policing illegal hits is softening the game and hurting the ratings, with that rant closely following the revelation that the late convicted murder and ex-player Aaron Hernandez exhibited at 27 the extreme effects of CTE usually seen in former players in their 60s. The Obama White House was a … [Read more...] about Bart & Fleming: How Donald Trump’s Football Fumbles Killed USFL; Why The Movie Star Is Dying; Studio Marketing Moves

Donald Trump May Be Reinstated On Twitter, But Truth Social Will Get First Dibs On Some, But Not All, Of His Posts
Donald Trump is “generally obligated” to post on Truth Social , his new social media network, and cannot make the same post on another platform for six hours. The restrictions were outlined in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday by Digital World Acquisition Corp., the entity that plans to take the former president’s media venture, Trump Media and Technology Group, public. Trump may soon be able to post on Twitter again if Elon Musk ultimately completes his $44 billion purchase of the platform. Musk has criticized Twitter’s decision to permanently ban Trump following the January 6 siege on the Capitol and has said that he would reinstate him. Trump has said that he doesn’t plan to return to Twitter, and the latest SEC filing shows how much Truth Social depends on his participation for its success. But the SEC filing also makes an exception for Trump’s political messaging, political fundraising and get-out-the-vote posts — covering a pretty … [Read more...] about Donald Trump May Be Reinstated On Twitter, But Truth Social Will Get First Dibs On Some, But Not All, Of His Posts
Bob Costas Punches Back At Donald Trump Over War On NFL
NBC sportscaster Bob Costas , taking a page from President Donald Trump ’s Punch Back Harder Playbook, took on POTUS’ war on NFL players who took a knee during the national anthem. “There’s almost no one in the NFL who wants to support or rationalize the tone and content of President Trump’s remarks,” Costas claimed on CNN ’s New Day this morning. Sports, patriotism and the flag have been so “conflated” that people can’t separate out any nuance, Costas said. “If you go to see Hamilton, which is about the founding of the republic, no one says, ‘Wait a minute! Don’t raise the curtain until we hear the national anthem.'” But it’s de rigueur in sports, which Costas said is sometimes moving and sometimes cynical, “because wrapping yourself in the flag, and honoring the military, is something which no one is going to object to. What it has come to mean is that the flag is primarily and only about the military?” Costas argued. “This is no disrespect to the … [Read more...] about Bob Costas Punches Back At Donald Trump Over War On NFL
Trump’s Bigotry Is a Drug to Texas Republicans
When Donald Trump ’s stumbling campaign blew into Texas for a three-city tour last week, its literature described its second and last rally in the state as an event in Houston, one of the most diverse cities in the United States. But it wasn’t. Trump’s rally was held in The Woodlands, a too-clean and vaguely menacing compound of glass, steel and well-manicured lawns some 35 miles north of Houston’s downtown. Instead of a city council, The Woodlands, founded by George Mitchell, the pioneer of shale fracking, has an executive board. Residents of The Woodlands are more than 92 percent white. It’s easy to see why Trump went there: The few protesters who drove in from out-of-town were easily kept in check by the horse cops providing picket defense for oil company headquarters and chain restaurants. Trump’s rallies and fundraisers in the state were chock-a-block with the color we’ve come to expect. He didn’t make a lot of sense . He said some provocative things . He swore, and … [Read more...] about Trump’s Bigotry Is a Drug to Texas Republicans
Trump Endorses Far-Right Gubernatorial Candidate Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania GOP Primary
Just three days before the May 17 primary in Pennsylvania to decide the Republican candidate for governor, Donald Trump announced his endorsement of frontrunner Doug Mastriano , a far-right state senator who has backed the former president’s election claims and even attended the Jan. 6 rally outside the Capitol. “There is no one in Pennsylvania who has done more, or fought harder, for Election Integrity than State Senator Doug Mastriano,” Trump said in a statement. “He has revealed the Deceit, Corruption, and outright Theft of the 2020 Presidential Election, and will do something about it,” Trump said in a statement Saturday, adding that Mastriano “is a fighter like few others, and has been with me right from the beginning, and now I have an obligation to be with him.” (Trump also reiterated his endorsement for Dr. Mehmet Oz, despite the MAGA fanbase’s displeasure with that reality TV candidate.) And there it is. Three days until the primary, and Trump wades into … [Read more...] about Trump Endorses Far-Right Gubernatorial Candidate Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania GOP Primary
‘Is Google Trying to Fuck Me?’ Trump’s Tech Paranoia Hits New Level
Donald Trump has had a question for his friends and advisers in the past several weeks: “Is Google trying to fuck me?” The source of his paranoia, according to two people with knowledge of the ex-president’s query, was the absence of an Android app for his struggling social media app, Truth Social . Since it launched in February, the app has been available only on Apple devices, leaving Android users — roughly 40 percent of the U.S. mobile device market — without access to the platform. This has left Trump with questions about the status of the product and whether his perceived enemies at Google had any plans to reject it. “He keeps hearing about how Google and YouTube have it out for him … including on Truth Social, and I think he’s taking [it] seriously,” says one source who’s discussed the topic with the twice-impeached former president. (In some instances since last month, Trump has instead asked if Google is trying to “screw with me” on Truth Social or has simply … [Read more...] about ‘Is Google Trying to Fuck Me?’ Trump’s Tech Paranoia Hits New Level
Exclusive: Trump Is Telling Allies His Record on Abortion Could Hurt His 2024 Chances
Donald Trump is on the precipice of achieving the most lasting and impactful part of his presidential legacy, as the justices he put on the Supreme Court prepare to help overturn Roe v. Wade and cement the former president’s status as a hero to social conservatives. But for a man who rarely opens his mouth without talking about his own (real or alleged) achievements, Trump has been near-silent on abortion since it became clear Roe was going under. Instead, Trump has been privately fretting about what the impending collapse of abortion rights will do for his own political prospects, telling those close to him that the issue could hurt him with “suburban women” should he try to retake the White House in 2024. “Suburban women have been a recurring concern for [former] President Trump, including during the 2020 campaign, when his smarter advisers were sounding the alarm to him about how he was losing suburbs. He is … worried women in the suburbs could punish him for this one day, … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Trump Is Telling Allies His Record on Abortion Could Hurt His 2024 Chances
Trump Says Scandal-Ridden Madison Cawthorn Should Get ‘Second Chance’
One day before voters in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District head to the polls in a crowded GOP primary, former President Donald Trump reiterated his support for scandal-ridden incumbent Madison Cawthorn . The show of support comes a week after Rolling Stone reported that Trump has been “totally weirded out” by some of the images and video that have been leaked of Cawthorn in the run-up to the primary. The freshman congressman, Trump said Monday in a post on Truth Social, deserves a “second chance,” adding that he has “made some foolish mistakes, which I don’t believe he’ll make again.” Trump comes to the defense of Rep. Cawthorn and says that while he’s recently made “some foolish mistakes” he deserves a second chance pic.twitter.com/7x1oaoGdRM — Meridith McGraw (@meridithmcgraw) May 16, 2022 Cawthorn’s recent issues include attempting to carry a loaded gun through airport security (for a second time), driving with a revoked license, and getting … [Read more...] about Trump Says Scandal-Ridden Madison Cawthorn Should Get ‘Second Chance’
Trump-Endorsed Gubernatorial Candidate Gets Trounced by Over 20 Points
Donald Trump prizes the power of his endorsement over just about anything, but the former president’s preferred candidates didn’t fare so well on Tuesday night. Mehmet Oz is leading David McCormick in the Senate primary in Pennsylvania, but not by enough to avoid a recount . Madison Cawthorn, meanwhile, failed to defend his seat in North Carolina despite Trump asking voters to give him a “second chance.” But the biggest blow, at least in terms of margin of victory, came in Idaho, where far-right Lieutenant Governor Janice McGeachin failed to come within 20 points of unseating incumbent Governor Brad Little . “I felt the honor of serving the great state of Idaho in good times and in tough times,” Little said Tuesday night in Boise. “Once again I’m humbled by the awesome opportunity to serve and work for the great people of Idaho.” Trump’s decision to back McGeachin was curious, as Little has long praised Trump himself and was the clear frontrunner to retain his seat. … [Read more...] about Trump-Endorsed Gubernatorial Candidate Gets Trounced by Over 20 Points
Election Coup Lawyer Trying to Shield Handwritten Trump Notes from Jan. 6 Committee
John Eastman , the right-wing lawyer close to former President Donald Trump who authored a memo outlining how to overturn the 2020 election, is seeking to shield from the House Jan. 6 committee two “hand-written notes” from Trump about “information that he thought might be useful” for an anticipated court battle over the election results. Politico first reported the news Friday, citing a court filing. That filing also reveals that Eastman regularly communicated with Trump in the lead-up to the Jan. 6 insurrection. This occurred either “directly with President Trump by phone and by email through his assistant or attorney agents,” or through one of “six conduits to or agents of” the then-president. Eastman invoking attorney-client privilege is nothing new. Since last November — when he was issued a subpoena — Eastman has regularly sought to slow-roll the process for turning over the more than 94,000 documents that the committee has requested. In December, for instance, … [Read more...] about Election Coup Lawyer Trying to Shield Handwritten Trump Notes from Jan. 6 Committee
