Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova , who became a symbol of fearless dissent when she interrupted a live TV broadcast in March to protest her country’s invasion of Ukraine, has been placed under house arrest in Moscow pending a trial related to a fresh anti-war protest in July. Ovsyannikova was arrested on August 10 in a police raid on her Moscow home. She appeared in court on Thursday (August 11) where she was charged with spreading fake news about the military, an offense that carries up to ten years in prison under Russian law. The charges are not related to her original TV protest but rather a fresh action in mid-July in which she stood opposite the Kremlin, holding a placard with slogans criticizing President Vladimir Putin and the Russian army. At her feet lay two dolls covered in red dye to highlight the deaths of children in the conflict. Following her first protest in March, which resulted in a brief arrest and $527 fine (30,000 rubles), Ovsyannikova … [Read more...] about Russian Anti-War Journalist Marina Ovsyannikova Placed Under House Arrest In Moscow, Faces 10-Year Prison Sentence

‘Sheriff Joe’ Arpaio Simply Cannot Stop Losing Elections
Joe Arpaio , the former sheriff of Arizona ’s Maricopa County, lost a race for mayor of Fountain Hills on Wednesday. Arpaio’s defeat at the hands of two-term incumbent Ginny Dickey marks the fourth consecutive loss at the polls for the Trump-loving 90-year-old, dating back to his ouster as sheriff of the state’s most populous county in 2016, in part due to his abusive immigration tactics that have resulted in at least $100 million in taxpayer-funded legal bills . Arpaio has yet to concede the race, though, and may pursue a legal challenge, according to the Associated Press. “I’m not a lawyer. I just want a little information,” Arpaio said. “In today’s environment, a large percentage of the people are not happy with the way the [election] system was working.” Besides being a “birther, ” Arpaio as sheriff refused to follow a judge’s order to stop racially profiling immigrants through traffic stops. After losing his reelection bid in 2016 and being convicted of contempt … [Read more...] about ‘Sheriff Joe’ Arpaio Simply Cannot Stop Losing Elections
‘This Fool’: Damn, It Feels Good (Not) to Be a Gangster
While considering the winning new Hulu comedy This Fool , the hardest question to answer is this: Who is the titular fool? One possibility is Julio, played by comedian Chris Estrada, who borrowed aspects of his own life to co-create the show with Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman, and Matt Ingebretson. Julio is in his early thirties, still living at home in South Central L.A. with his mother Esperanza (Laura Patalano) and grandmother Maria (Julia Vera). He is in the perpetual thrall of his troublemaking ex-girlfriend Maggie (Michelle Ortiz), and is so afraid of confrontation that he will literally drive across his own lawn rather than argue with some vaguely sketchy guys whose car is blocking his driveway. As Maria notes, “If you look closely, he is always crying, a little bit.” The other is Julio’s older cousin Luis (Frankie Quiñones), an ex-gangster just out of prison and crashing on Esperanza’s couch while he puts his life back together. Luis has all the swagger that Julio lacks, … [Read more...] about ‘This Fool’: Damn, It Feels Good (Not) to Be a Gangster
N95 Masks vs. KN95 Masks: Which Work Best to Protect Against Covid?
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. Though mask restrictions are easing across the country (and around the world), officials say you shouldn’t be taking off your masks just yet, especially if you’re in crowded places or starting to travel. Even if you have received your vaccine and booster, medical experts continue to promote the wearing of face coverings as an effective way to prevent the spread of Covid-19 , the Omicron variant, the new BA.5 variant and other potentially harmful viruses in the air. And while airlines and the FAA have relaxed guidelines mandating the wearing of face masks in-flight, many travelers are still keeping their masks on when sharing air with hundreds of passengers for hours at a time. With Covid infections rising again, some states have also started debating reinstating a mask mandate, especially for indoor dining and entertainment. … [Read more...] about N95 Masks vs. KN95 Masks: Which Work Best to Protect Against Covid?

Cannabis Packaging Regulations and Best Practices
Opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not reflect the views of Rolling Stone editors or publishers. As one of the fastest-growing, highly regulated industries in the country, the cannabis industry has been a potential goldmine for years. Brands have evolved from illicit-market-esque branding with sophisticated marketing strategies. In the messy throes of brand strategy, in-store design, social media marketing, digital advertising and more, packaging design remains an underestimated piece of the mix. Cannabis product packaging is a quiet sales pitch to your customers to buy your product; it communicates the price, value, product benefits and the brand’s identity. It is often the first touchpoint when a customer browses displays in a dispensary. In fact, 72 percent of American consumers say that a product’s packaging design has an impact on their decision to buy. Let’s look at why cannabis packaging is so overlooked and how you can change the game by … [Read more...] about Cannabis Packaging Regulations and Best Practices

Chinese Court Rejects Plaintiff’s Appeal In Landmark Sexual Harassment Case Against TV Host
A Chinese court has rejected an appeal by a young woman who alleged sexual harassment against a popular male TV host in what has been referred to as a landmark case. Foreign media outfits reporting locally have called the decision a blow to China’s #MeToo movement. In 2018, Zhou Xiaoxuan accused CCTV host Zhu Jun of making unwanted advances, including kissing and groping her, while she was an intern at the broadcaster in 2014. Last September, a Beijing court dismissed Zhou’s claims saying the now-29-year-old had not presented sufficient evidence. The appeal was rejected yesterday on similar grounds. Zhou previously said the judge in the case had refused her requests to retrieve evidence, including security camera footage from outside the dressing room where the incident allegedly took place. Speaking to supporters after the verdict, Zhou said, “Four years have passed, and the most important thing is that we have raised this question: when a woman encounters … [Read more...] about Chinese Court Rejects Plaintiff’s Appeal In Landmark Sexual Harassment Case Against TV Host
