From a Gun-Free Bubble, NRA Demands ‘More Guns’ To Limit Mass Shootings
HOUSTON—The biggest names of the National Rifle Association’s annual gun show wouldn’t take the stage until mid-afternoon on Friday. B ut a young man with a vintage Make America Great hat, and a couple wearing matching “ULTRA MAGA” shirts, began camping out in the third-floor hallway of the convention center not long after 9 a.m. to guarantee themselves of prime seats for the star attraction: former president Donald Trump . The timing of this conference, the NRA ’s guns-palooza, is beyond perverse, coming just days after 19 students and 2 teachers were massacred by an 18-year-old wielding an AR-15 in Uvalde . By noon on Friday, a protest was in full-tilt across the street from the convention hall. D emonstrators for gun control held signs aloft with slogans like “NRA OWNS GOP.” One listed the names of the children killed in their classroom on Tuesday, etched in black and blood red. “¡Asesinos!” yelled a man repeatedly into a megaphone, using the Spanish word for “killers.” … [Read more...] about From a Gun-Free Bubble, NRA Demands ‘More Guns’ To Limit Mass Shootings
Exclusive Book Excerpt: ‘Love Goes To Buildings On Fire: Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever’
‘Love Goes To Buildings On Fire: Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever,’ by Rolling Stone contributor Will Hermes and available today, chronicles the period between 1973-1978 during which punk, hip-hop, salsa and other revolutionary forms of popular music were born or reinvented. In this exclusive excerpt, Hermes tells the stories of three era-defining musical beginnings: the collaboration of punk pioneers Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell, the early days of the New York Dolls and the legacy of jazz legend Sonny Rollins. Tom Miller was tripping his balls off on LSD in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. The next thing he knew, a week later, he was in New York City, crashing in a crappy East Village apartment with his old friend Richard Meyers. They were both 19 years old. They’d met at Sanford, a boarding school for ne’er-do-wells and other types near Wilmington. Meyers was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, a town shadowed by the Lexington Narcotics Farm rehab facility, … [Read more...] about Exclusive Book Excerpt: ‘Love Goes To Buildings On Fire: Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever’

‘The Conjuring’ Haunted House That Inspired The Horror Film Franchise Has Been Sold
As a young woman noted at the beginning of The Conjuring , “It scares us just thinking about it.” She was talking about the elements that went into the film. But that statement also applies to the real estate price wars that are driving housing toward the sky throughout the country. In Rhode Island, that means that the early 19th century house that inspired the horror film (but wasn’t shot there) fetched a price 27% above asking, selling recently for $1.52 million. For the uninitiated, the 2013 horror film The Conjuring is a fictionalized account of the Perron family and their work with paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The house has a history of murder, rape and suicide. Apparently that’s not enough to dissuade buyers in this over-heated market: the property’s listing says it’s rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman, who resided there in the 19th century. The 3,109-square-foot house is located at 1677 Round Top Road in … [Read more...] about ‘The Conjuring’ Haunted House That Inspired The Horror Film Franchise Has Been Sold

As Monaco Grand Prix Revs Up, Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali Talks U.S. Expansion And TV Future
Formula 1 is back on familiar turf this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix, a glamour-wrapped race that has been a fixture since 1929. While many of the track contours and Côte d’Azur vistas are little changed, the auto racing circuit itself has a decidedly revamped look. Earlier this month, it made a splashy debut in Miami, the latest stop in its U.S. expansion, which will take it to Las Vegas next year. That bow followed the arrival of the latest season of Netflix docu hit Drive to Survive , with the show adding pop-culture luster to negotiations for a potentially lucrative new U.S. media deal. “The American market is ready for F1,” Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali told Deadline in an interview ahead of today’s race. “Being ready means that we need to keep working on the fact that we need to stay connected with our fans in the U.S. We need to speak the same language, we need to give context.” The Miami event provided the latest template, as celebrity … [Read more...] about As Monaco Grand Prix Revs Up, Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali Talks U.S. Expansion And TV Future
Newsom Tests Positive For Covid Just 10 Days After His Second Booster Shot
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that he has tested positive for Covid -19, despite being doubled vaxxed and boosted. He is exhibiting only mild symptoms and will begin taking Paxlovid to combat the virus, according to a statement from his office. The news comes as the state’s number of infections has grown rapidly in recent weeks, even as the governor has sought to keep the focus on initiatives around global climate leadership, gun control, rent relief and water conservation. Sacramento, where Newsom lives and works, has a test positivity rate well above the state’s already high average rate. California’s 7-day test positivity rate is at 7%. Sacramento County hit 10.4% on Friday. Given that so many residents are employing at-home test kits, which are not reported in official figures, the real rate is likely much higher. Here is the announcement issued by Newsom’s office today: This morning, the Governor tested positive for COVID-19 after … [Read more...] about Newsom Tests Positive For Covid Just 10 Days After His Second Booster Shot
