As one of the most influential and innovative electric guitarists in rock history, Jeff Beck has recorded and toured with enough musical luminaries over the past six decades to fill the guest lists at multiple Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. So it’s totally fitting that his first full-length release in six years should be a collaboration with … Johnny Depp ? The legendary six-string genius and the actor got along when Beck guested on Rise , the 2019 album from Hollywood Vampires (a long-running supergroup co-founded by Depp with Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry), that Depp and Beck decided to make an entire album together in 2020 as a pandemic time-killer. But Depp’s decision to release a record like this now, just weeks after the verdict in the defamation case involving his ex-wife Amber Heard, is bizarre, and in some ways offensive, especially as the album leans into a kind of macho rock cliché that has long been freighted with notions of … [Read more...] about Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp Join Forces for the at Times Pro Forma, at Times Genuinely Ugly Rock Album ’18’

Mads Mikkelsen On Replacing Johnny Depp In ‘Fantastic Beasts’ And Why Depp “Might” Come Back – Sarajevo
Although Mads Mikkelsen arrived at the Sarajevo Film Festival to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for his outstanding contribution to the art of film, many of the crowd who attended the event’s morning “Coffee With…” event on Monday seemed, rather worryingly, to be fans of the Danish star’s TV work — notably NBC’s cannibal drama Hannibal . Nevertheless, the actor took their questions in his stride as part of a wide-ranging conversation that embraced his early career in Danish indie cinema, his move to the U.S. and the MCU, his affection for Pink Floyd, and his love of football. “I always wanted to make money out of sports,” he quipped. “It never happened.” Speaking of his most recent release, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore , in which he played Gellert Grindelwald, Mikkelsen admitted he’d had concerns about replacing Johnny Depp , who withdrew from the franchise due to his much-publicized court case with ex-wife Amber Heard. He also hinted … [Read more...] about Mads Mikkelsen On Replacing Johnny Depp In ‘Fantastic Beasts’ And Why Depp “Might” Come Back – Sarajevo

‘Batgirl’ Blindside: Why Warner Bros. Decided to Pull the Plug
Another day, another DC drama. Warner Bros. Discovery has killed its $78 million Batgirl movie six months after it wrapped production. Adding insult to injury, the film’s cast members didn’t receive a heads up and were “blindsided,” sources say. The DC Extended Universe film that stars In the Heights ’ Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl, was poised to stream on HBO Max or receive a theatrical release. In a shocking turn of events, it will get neither and is being shelved altogether. But why the abrupt move? Sources say the film began testing with audiences on July 14, and while Grace’s performance was embraced, the overall feedback was harsh. One source familiar with audience testing for the film likened it to “a bad episode of TV,” while another said “it’s definitely not theatrical.” The new regime at WBD, headed up by David Zaslav, has handed down a mandate that DC films should be released theatrically or not at all. With Batgirl , … [Read more...] about ‘Batgirl’ Blindside: Why Warner Bros. Decided to Pull the Plug
Venice: Polemics, Possible Prizewinners & A Late-Fest Red Carpet Protest
The Venice Film Festival draws to a close this evening, when prizes will be handed out by Lucrecia Martel ’s jury. It’s been a hot 10 days on the Lido, and not just because the mercury was stifling throughout. We expected controversy coming in, and certainly the inclusion of Roman Polanski ’s An Officer And A Spy in competition caused a stir at the outset — Martel on opening day seemed to suggest she might not give the film a fair shake, only to clarify her remarks 24 hours later. It was relatively smooth sailing from then on, with pictures vying for the Golden Lion generally well-received. Much attention focused on Warner Bros’ Joker and Netflix’s Marriage Story which both got extended standing ovations. It ain’t over til it’s over, however, and early this morning a protest broke out on the red carpet. About 200 people from the No Large Ships committee occupied the area in front of the Palazzo del Cinema. A peaceful proceeding, it focused largely on … [Read more...] about Venice: Polemics, Possible Prizewinners & A Late-Fest Red Carpet Protest
How the ‘Worst TikTok’ of the Week ‘Took a Piss on the Tropes of the App’ — According to Eve 6
The Internet notoriously sees cringe as currency — with users dredging up the most embarrassing videos from the bowels of TikTok as a way to accrue likes via second-hand shame. This week, however, one Twitter user’s attempt to poke fun at a TikTok backfired, heaping praise on an unsuspecting Vegas noise act with a penchant for destroying trash receptacles. It all started as these things often do, with a random user with “Based” in his display name tweeting out a video with the dashed-off sentiment, “This is the worst TikTok I’ve ever seen.” The TikTok in question should look pretty familiar to anyone who has been to a DIY show. A ring of bored-looking kids in black toting Bud Lites stand around in a dirt backyard as a singer writhes around in the dust, accompanied by a person with a wallet chain beating an aluminum trash can with a baseball bat. A skinny boy in a purple and black tie-dyed shirt is also standing by himself, shuffling his feet uncomfortably. He is all of us. … [Read more...] about How the ‘Worst TikTok’ of the Week ‘Took a Piss on the Tropes of the App’ — According to Eve 6
Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad’s Life as a Drug Kingpin
T he black Cadillac pulls into the diner’s parking lot in Queens. Built in the 1950s, the building looks like it only exists on a rainy day, the rock-lined exterior out of another time. I step out of the Uber and look up at the restaurant where, in 1983, my father was arrested after escaping federal prison. He had spent two years on the lam, and was brought down by the U.S. Marshals after eating breakfast with his longtime mistress. He had just come from organizing a new shipment from Colombia. I imagine the day was also rainy. Almost 40 years later, I am there to meet with the Drug Enforcement Agency officer who tracked him for nearly a decade, trying to bring down one of the biggest mari juana kingpins of the 1970s, the man I once called “Daddy,” and one of the architects of the modern drug trade: Dan McGuiness. When the Cadillac arrived at my hotel, I had to laugh. The last time I saw my father, he, too, was driving a black Cadillac. He had just arrived in Los Angeles … [Read more...] about Learjets, Mistresses, and Bales of Weed: My Dad’s Life as a Drug Kingpin
