January 24, 2023 by deadline.com

Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical feature The Fabelmans earned seven Oscar nominations this morning, including one for Spielberg’s longtime collaborator, composer John Williams , and one for veteran actor Judd Hirsch , who plays Boris, a fictionalized version of Spielberg’s great uncle in the movie. At 90 years 350 days, Williams became the oldest person to be nominated for an Oscar (excluding honorary awards). He also topped his own record as the most nominated living person with 53 Oscar noms. (Only Walt Disney has more overall, 59.) At 87 years and 315 days, Hirsch became the second oldest acting nominee behind Christopher Plummer who was 88 years and 41 days at the time of his nomination and ahead of Titanic’ s Gloria Stuart who was 87 years, 221 days. Hirsch’s second Oscar nomination comes 42 years after his first; he was nominated in the same Supporting Actor category in 1981 for Ordinary People. ‘The 12th Victim’ Showtime Docuseries Re-Examines Murder Conviction Of Caril Ann Fugate In 1958 Killing Spree

January 24, 2023 by deadline.com

Showtime is exploring an infamous teenage couple who were convicted of murdering 11 people in the 1950s in the network’s latest docuseries. The 12th Victim is a four-part docuseries following the crimes of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate. Told through a stylistic blend of archival and recreated footage and countless film and television series inspired by the killings, the series reexamines Fugate’s guilty verdict, who was 14 years old at the time of the killings, through a modern lens, questioning the media and judicial system’s treatment of her despite her self-proclaimed innocence. On Tuesday, Showtime released a trailer for the series and announced it will debut on February 17. In 1958, a grisly string of murders terrified the Midwest, as 18-year-old Starkweather killed 11 victims in Nebraska and Wyoming with his girlfriend Fugate by his side. Fugate went on to become the youngest female in U.S. history to be tried and convicted of first-degree murder … [Read more...] about ‘The 12th Victim’ Showtime Docuseries Re-Examines Murder Conviction Of Caril Ann Fugate In 1958 Killing Spree

The film stars Thomasin Mackenzie, Anne Hathaway , and Shea Whigham. Eileen (Mackenzie)  starts with the titular character sitting in her car on a beach, watching a couple make up. Her arousal peaks as a voyeur, and stuffs ice down her pants to cool down so to speak. The 24-year old is the loner type who works as a prison receptionist. She has her eyes on one of the prison guards,  and during her downtime at work her imagination runs wild with the possibilities of a hook up. Her mother is dead and now she lives with her father (played by Shea Whigham) who is a retired cop and raging alcoholic. When Eileen comes home from work one day, she sees the police trying to calm him while he’s drunk and waving a gun around in the middle of the street. VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society

January 17, 2023 by deadline.com

Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society ’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 VES Awards , which were announced today. Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010. The hardware will be doled out at the 21st annual VES Awards on Wednesday, February 15, at The Beverly Hilton. Avatar: The Way of Water will vie for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — the category that hews closest to the Visual Effects Oscar — against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick , the film right behind the Avatar sequel on the 2022 list of top … [Read more...] about VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society
