COMEDY 08/06/2018 05:21 am ET The "Last Week Tonight" host said one claim is "just flagrantly false." By Ed Mazza President Donald Trump tweeted a defense of his “wonderful son” Donald Trump Jr. on Sunday, and “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver didn’t know how to begin unpacking it: Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 5, 2018 Oliver said: “There is so much wrong there, from the fact it undermines the excuse he supposedly dictated that this meeting was about Russian adoptions to claiming he didn’t know about it, and if he did, nothing happened, and if it wasn’t, he didn’t know about it.” But that wasn’t what … [Read more...] about John Oliver Exposes The Most ‘Galling Lie’ In Trump’s Defense Of Don Jr.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver kicked off 2016 with a note about New Year's resolutions, or "the exact middle ground between lying to yourself and lying to other people." Though the HBO show is on hiatus until Feb. 14, a short video on the topic was posted online to note a more realistic strategy to managing months of expectations. "Every December, for some reason, we decide that next year will be the one when everything turns around," he says. "But let's be honest: we're a few days into the New Year now, and you haven't broken your resolutions yet, statistically, you are about to. And that can be depressing but don't panic, all hope is not lost because the key thing to resolutions is not how to keep them, it's how to revise them once you've failed." The host explains how to properly edit expectations related to exercise and healthy eating. That way, “you haven’t failed your New Year’s resolutions, you’ve just succeeded in a different way." He … [Read more...] about John Oliver Explains How to Revise New Year’s Resolutions After Inevitably Not Keeping Them
John Oliver returned to the set of Last Week Tonight after taking an extended break to slam everyone offering “thoughts and prayers” in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida and praise the child survivors standing up against the gun lobby. The talk show host suggested the shooting, which resulted in the death of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, represented something all too common: “These events are now so familiar, we basically automatically know how each side will play out: ‘thoughts and prayers,’ ‘fuck your thoughts and prayers,’ ‘it’s a mental health problem,’ ‘yeah, but it’s also a gun problem,’ and then someone says ‘now’s not the time to talk about gun control,’ and then everybody moves on until it inevitably happens again. But this time felt slightly different because when the ‘now’s not the time’ argument came out, … [Read more...] about John Oliver Applauds Parkland Shooting Survivors For Demanding Action on Gun Control
Here’s a bit of great news: Last Week Tonight returns this weekend. In anticipation of the new season premiere, John Oliver held a press breakfast to discuss a range of issues, including that now-infamous interview with Dustin Hoffman. If you remember, John Oliver was set to lead a panel discussion for a 20th anniversary screening of the film Wag the Dog. This was back in December, just barely a month after Anna Graham Hunter published her account of experiencing repeated sexual harassment by Hoffman when she was a minor. (Since then, other women, including Meryl Streep and his Death of a Salesman costar Kathryn Rossetter, have also accused Hoffman of harassment or assault.)During the discussion, Oliver asked Hoffman about the accusations and about his subsequent statement, which was basically the sexual assault equivalent of “I’m sorry if you were offended.” Oliver has since said that Hoffman’s unwillingness to engage in … [Read more...] about John Oliver on Why He Couldn’t
John Oliver had some fun at the expense of Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for her filibuster-like speech she had on behalf of DREAMers on Wednesday. The Last Week Tonight host appeared on The Late Show and Stephen Colbert had mentioned that at the time of the show’s taping, the House Minority Leader had already been speaking on the House floor for over eight hours, which the audience applauded. However, Oliver wasn’t so quick to join in on the celebration.“I’m not sure deep down you know for sure if or what you’re applauding there,” Oliver reacted. “‘Oh, she talked for seven hours.’ That sounds like an endurance effort to do and to listen to, to some extent.”But wait, he wasn’t done.“I don’t know if anyone wants to hear Nancy Pelosi speak about anything for seven hours,” Oliver said. “If she read the Harry Potter audiobook, we’d have no movies right now! That’s what I’m … [Read more...] about John Oliver Mocks Nancy Pelosi: I Don’t Know If Anyone Wants to Hear Her Speak For That Long
