Villanelle got the better of Eve Polastri as Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer nabbed the lead actress in a drama series award over her co-star Sandra Oh. Comer, who plays elegant and talented killer Villanelle, beat her co-star Oh, who plays Polastri, the British spy searching for Villanelle, in the BBC America drama. This comes after Oh was pipped to the crown by Claire Foy at last year’s award, meaning that the former Greys Anatomy star is still waiting for her first win. It is Comer’s second major award of the year – after scoring the BAFTA – and on her debut Emmy nomination. In addition to beating Oh, who was widely considered the favorite in the category, Comer beat Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, Ozark’s Laura Linney, House of Cards’ Robin Wright, This Is Us’ Mandy Moore and How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and HBO’s Veep came into the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards looking like a front-running candidate to make history but in the end the Academy voters elected to go in a different direction by making Fleabag the victor. Veep and Louis-Dreyfus were shockingly shut-out in favor of a scruffy newcomer with populist charms: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the executive producer, creator, writer and star of Fleabag, was the unexpected winner in the category of best actress in a comedy series, which denied Louis-Dreyfus a chance to make history as the first performer to win nine Emmys. Louis-Dreyfus instead remains tied with Cloris Leachman for the most career Emmy wins (eight) by any performer. Fleabag also won the prize for best comedy and Waller-Bridge grabbed a third statuette for best writing, which left Veep looking like a latter-day Walter Mondale. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences abruptly moved the 2020 Academy Awards ceremony up to early February, panic set in among those other awards shows that often serve as bellweathers for Oscar’s grande finale. Stung by record low ratings for the 2018 telecast, hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel, an Academy Governor told me, “We have to do something.” Thinking they were losing their audience by being the last in a long line of ceremonies, where often we see the same winners and hear variations on the same speeches, AMPAS suddenly withdrew the already announced date of February 23rd, 2020 and instead declared February 9th, 2020—a full two weeks earlier than normal (the show will move back to the end of February in 2021 and 2022). That was problematic for BAFTA—perhaps the most prestigious of the pre-Oscar shows. But working with Motion Picture Academy officials, BAFTA moved to February 2nd (Super Bowl be damned), just one … [Read more...] about SAG & Golden Globes Preview: How Will Earlier Oscars Date Shape 2020 Season?
EXCLUSIVE: Ridley Scott has committed to direct a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years before being let out of jail in 2016. It is the first project Lady Gaga has attached herself to since her Best Actress nomination in a breakout turn opposite Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for writing the song Shallow, one of a number of hits on the soundtrack. The combination of actress and director is already starting to draw interest but the first stop will be Fox/Disney, where Scott Free has its first look, and where Scott will next direct The Last Duel, with Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck in a coproduction between Scott Free and Pearl Street. I am happy to say I have been informed I beat all “experts” in the Gold Derby contest to predict winners of this year’s Emmy Awards. So while on a high from that triumph, let me make some Emmy predictions about next year even though we are a full 12 months away from the big night in 2020. Even though Emmys have a history of repeating their winners year after year, the slate will be wiped clean in the top three categories of Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series and Best Limited Series. Since the night’s big winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge firmly closed the door on any future seasons of her four-time Emmy-winning comedy series Fleabag after just two six-episode seasons, I predict that something else will win this prize next year. And since the Television Academy has decided to send off the final season of HBO’s juggernaut Game of Thrones with 12 wins and its fourth Drama Series trophy, we can be assured it won’t be back either. And just in … [Read more...] about Emmys Aftermath: The Parties Were Hot, The Ratings Were Cold, But The Winners And Their Speeches Made This An Emmys Worth Remembering
