The USC Libraries on Wednesday unveiled nominees for its 35th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the screenwriters of the year’s best film and episodic series adaptations, along with the writers of the works on which they are based. This year’s film nominees are the screenwriters and original authors from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Living, She Said, Top Gun: Maverick and Women Talking . In TV, screenwriters were nominated for penning episodes of The Crown, Fleishman Is in Trouble, Slow Horses, Tokyo Vice and Under the Banner of Heaven . Winners will be announced March 4 at a ceremony at USC’s Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library, set to be the first in-person awards-season event for the group since 2020 owing to the pandemic. Tosin Cole was larking about on the set of the Warner Bros House Party reboot in Los Angeles when an email dropped from casting director Kim Coleman ( BlacKkKlansman ) about Emmett Till ’s story. “I was like, ‘I’m filming for months non stop, I want to go home,’ ” he recalls thinking. “They wanted me to go for Medgar Evers , and I was like, ‘I don’t know who that is. Let me think about it.’ “ His agent brought him up short telling him, “No, you got to do it. At least send a tape.” “I was like, ‘I’m doing night shifts in LA. I don’t know when I’ll have time,’ ” he worried. After landing his first Oscar nomination on Tuesday for his starring role in the Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis , Austin Butler spoke with Deadline about the breakthrough, as well as the passing of Lisa Marie Presley, upcoming roles in Dune: Part Two and Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders , and his goals as he moves forward. Endeavor Content Appoints Former Avalon Exec Tim Robinson As COO
Endeavor Content has appointed former Avalon COO Tim Robinson to the same role. In the newly created position, Robinson will oversee operations including business affairs, finance, HR and corporate development and will also be tasked with helping to drive growth in the U.S. and international markets. Brit Robinson, who will be based in Los Angeles, was most recently COO of talent management and production company Avalon ( Last Week Tonight With John Oliver ) and before that, was interim COO at Vertical Networks, Elisabeth Murdoch’s digital content outfit. Greenwich Entertainment has picked up all rights excluding TV to the documentary Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV , directed and produced by Amanda Kim, which world premiered in U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The film will launch its U.S. theatrical release at New York’s Film Form on March 24, being distributed in Canada by Films We Like starting on the same date, ahead of its U.S. broadcast premiere on PBS’ American Masters . Anton Launching TV Production Arm Helmed By Former Fremantle Alums Sangeeta Desai & Sarah Doole
Anton is opening a TV production arm helmed by former Fremantle alums Sangeeta Desai and Sarah Doole. The producer-financier’s London-based TV shingle will make global shows via the boutique studio and the outfit is seeking to attract creatives to partner with on scripted labels across Europe. The TV arm will also look at direct and first-look deals with established on and off-screen talent. To run the shingle, Anton has made a duo of splashy hires in the form of business unit boss Desai and Creative Director Doole, who worked closely together at Fremantle. Doole, who was most recently CEO of It’s a Sin producer Red Productions and is a former Fremantle Director of Global Drama, will shape content plans, while Desai spearheads strategy, operations and business development.
