Fox News Tops March And Q1 Ratings, But News Network Audiences Continue To Drop Versus 2022; CNN Sees Steep Primetime Decline

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

Fox News topped March ratings , but all of the major news networks saw double digit erosion from the same month in 2022. CNN saw some of the steepest declines, with it primetime audience down 61% from March of 2022, and dropping 73% in the 25-54 demo. One factor: The lack of a dominant news story. The Ukraine war dominated the news cycle in the same period a year ago, and CNN actually saw a viewership spike back then. But the network has been trying to retool its 9 PM ET hour, scheduling special townhalls and one-on-one interviews. The network has said that the programming is a bit of an experiment that has not seen a full promotional push, while sources say it has been talking to figures like Gayle King and Charles Barkley about hosting a weekly show in the slot. The network also is launching an overhaul of its daytime lineup next month. While CNN beat MSNBC in the 25-54 primetime demo during the first quarter, it was edged out by the NBCU network during March. … [Read more...] about Fox News Tops March And Q1 Ratings, But News Network Audiences Continue To Drop Versus 2022; CNN Sees Steep Primetime Decline

ABC Renewal Status Report: ‘Station 19’, ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘The Rookie’, ‘The Conners’, ‘Big Sky’ & More

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

Fourth in a series on status of broadcast network series renewals. Amid Disney companywide cutbacks, which include the elimination of 7,000 jobs , ABC is taking a measured approach to its scripted series renewals. Only one show, award-winning sophomore comedy Abbott Elementary, received a very early Season 3 pickup in January. It was joined on Friday by drama stalwart Grey’s Anatomy, which was renewed for Season 20. That leaves the majority of the network’s scripted roster in a holding pattern — all except the two already renewed as well as The Goldbergs and A Million Little Things , which are ending their runs this spring. With four drama pilots (including The Good Doctor planted spinoff) and two comedy pilots — the most for a broadcast network this season and all headlined by big-name stars — ABC is expected to take longer than usual on most renewals. It would use the time to evaluate a number of the current series against the pilots for the limited slots … [Read more...] about ABC Renewal Status Report: ‘Station 19’, ‘The Good Doctor’, ‘The Rookie’, ‘The Conners’, ‘Big Sky’ & More

BBC News Channel To Bench Seasoned Presenters From Next Week As Output Is Relaunched

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE : BBC News will make sweeping changes to its news channel presenting line-up from next week, with a number of seasoned anchors dropping off air. The British broadcaster is merging its UK and World News stations into a single channel, with changes gradually being introduced from April 3. Audiences are unlikely to notice a “big bang” overhaul, but one of the most notable differences will be the channel’s presenter lineup. Newsroom sources also expect BBC management to rethink plans to reduce UK news amid fears that the merger could dilute domestic output and damage viewing figures. The BBC said the channel always planned to carry UK news for local viewers. From next week, five journalists will take up Chief Presenter roles, including Matthew Amroliwala, Yalda Hakim, Christian Fraser, Lucy Hockings, and Maryam Moshiri. A further 10 UK-based presenters were unsuccessful in applying for these roles , and Deadline hears that many have dropped off BBC News’ … [Read more...] about BBC News Channel To Bench Seasoned Presenters From Next Week As Output Is Relaunched

Richard Sharp Appointment “Should Not Stand,” Says Former BBC Director General

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

The BBC’s appointment of Chair Richard Sharp “should not stand” and the process was “fatally flawed,” according to former Director General John Birt . The embattled Sharp, who is awaiting the result of a government inquiry into his appointment, was described by Birt as “a person of obvious weight and consequence but an unsuitable candidate in one vital respect.” “I don’t think the appointment should stand,” Birt told the UK’s influential DCMS Committee (DCMSC) this afternoon. “This isn’t about political connections because governments of all kinds have appointed BBC Chairs who enjoy their confidence. But having known every BBC Chair for decades, governments have tended to have a good record for appointing people with an independent cast of mind, who will protect the BBC’s independence.” Deadline revealed last week that the BBC had raised concerns about the way the government was going about appointing its new Chairman before the controversial hire of Sharp, who has … [Read more...] about Richard Sharp Appointment “Should Not Stand,” Says Former BBC Director General

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

Disney has eliminated a small business unit focused on exploring the metaverse , part of its initial efforts to reduce its workforce by about 7,000 employees. About 50 workers were part of the group dedicated to “next-generation storytelling and consumer experiences.” The elimination of the unit, first reported by The Wall Street Journal , was confirmed to Deadline by a person familiar with the staff reductions. Mike White, a former consumer products exec who had been leading the unit, will remain at the company in a yet-to-be-determined role, the source said. On Monday, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in a staff memo that the first of three rounds of layoffs is starting this week as the company pushes toward a stated goal of $5.5 billion in cost savings. Word emerged Monday evening of a number of exec departures across the company’s general entertainment operations. Former CEO Bob Chapek at one time talked up the metaverse as a significant growth opportunity … [Read more...] about Disney Unplugs Metaverse Unit During Initial Round Of Layoffs

‘Royal Crackers’ Renewed For Season 2 By Adult Swim

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

Adult Swim has handed an early Season 2 renewal to animated comedy series Royal Crackers . The move comes ahead of the series premiere on Sunday, April 2. Created by and starring Jason Ruiz , the half-hour comedy follows the Hornsby family as they vie for control of their once-successful cracker company. In addition to Ruiz, the series also stars Andrew Santino, Jessica St. Clair, David Gbori, Maile Flanagan and Fred Tatasciore. “Television has done a great job exploring how families clash over the fate of oil, media or cattle empires, but until now, no one has had the courage to address the savory snack food industry,” explained Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. Per the logline, Royal Crackers was once the king of snacks, but the empire is crumbling. When the family patriarch, tyrannical company founder Theodore Hornsby ends up in a “super coma,” the rest of the Hornsbys will take their lack of talent and business acumen and try to … [Read more...] about ‘Royal Crackers’ Renewed For Season 2 By Adult Swim

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Boss On Season 5 Finale, Plans For June’s Conclusion & ‘The Testaments’

November 8, 2022 by deadline.com

SPOILER ALERT: The story below reveals major plot points from Hulu ’s The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 finale. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped up its fifth season tonight and while a lot has changed for June Osborne ( Elisabeth Moss ), the season ends in ways similar to how it all began. When viewers first meet June, she is torn apart from her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and the life they shared with their daughter Hannah—a scene that’s imitated in the Season 5 finale. June and her daughter Nichole board a train for an unknown future in Hawaii as Luke is arrested by the authorities. His arrest is unfair considering Luke was saving his wife from a man attempting to kill her by running her over in his truck but here we are—the world is crumbling. It’s worth noting the hired hitman was sent by Gilead to dispose of the thorn in their side once and for all but failed. If June was a cat, she’d be down to three lives if my math is accurate. A big part of her she’s … [Read more...] about ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Boss On Season 5 Finale, Plans For June’s Conclusion & ‘The Testaments’

‘Succession’ Soars To Series High Audience Of 2.3M For Final Season Premiere

March 28, 2023 by deadline.com

The Roys are back with a vengeance. The Season 4 premiere of Succession drew an audience of 2.3M on Sunday across HBO Max and linear telecasts, which is a series high for same-day viewers. Total viewing for Sunday night was up 62% compared to Season 3’s premiere viewership of 1.4M in October 2021. At the time, that marked the best premiere night performance of any HBO original series since HBO Max launched in May 2020. Sunday’s viewership is also up about 33% from the Season 3 finale’s 1.7M. Season 3 averaged about 7.2M viewers per episode, according to HBO. HBO also says that all previous seasons of Succession saw a 4x increase in viewership in the week leading up to the Season 4 premiere, compared to the week prior. While viewing for Succession Season 4 does trail behind other Sunday shows like House of the Dragon, The Last of Us and Euphoria, the premiere episode tracked ahead of the Season 2 premiere of The White Lotus (1.9M).
