‘Smash’ Musical Could Hit Broadway “Sooner Than Later”, Says Composer Marc Shaiman; First-Look Photos Of All-Star Reading Unveiled
The stage musical adaptation of NBC’s Smash is “alive and kicking,” says producer Neil Meron , and he and composer Marc Shaiman have the photos to prove it. Both Meron and Shaiman posted photos – and, in Shaiman’s case, some Broadway -belting-style audio clips – of an all-star reading of the work in progress, with Meron writing, “Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series—amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus.” See the photos below. Shaiman wasn’t quite as shy about that big movie production – no secret it’s Steven Spielberg – and provided a few more hints about the project. Among the performers at the reading: Smash series stars Megan Hilty and Krysta Rodriguez … [Read more...] about ‘Smash’ Musical Could Hit Broadway “Sooner Than Later”, Says Composer Marc Shaiman; First-Look Photos Of All-Star Reading Unveiled

Soccer Star Kurt Zouma Pleads Guilty To Kicking, Slapping Cat
Getty Soccer star Kurt Zouma has pleaded guilty to charges he attacked at least one of his cats in an abhorrent act back in February -- admitting in court on Tuesday that he did kick and slap at least one of the pets. Zouma was seen on video back on Feb. 6 punting one of his two felines across his house's floor, and then slapping one of them as well. Earlier this week, he was formally charged over the incident. The 27-year-old, who's a member of France's national team, appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court in London ... and pleaded guilty to two charges -- one accusing him of kicking a cat in the abdomen, and one accusing him of slapping a cat in the head. Kurt's younger brother, Yoan , also pleaded guilty to a charge that he aided and abetted Kurt during the incident after officials say he was the one who filmed it all and posted it to social media. The two are due back in court on June 1 for sentencing -- it's unclear if either is facing significant … [Read more...] about Soccer Star Kurt Zouma Pleads Guilty To Kicking, Slapping Cat
Cannes Review: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne’s ‘Tori And Lokita’
You can pretty much bet that whenever the Dardenne brothers show up with a new film in Cannes , it will walk away with some sort of prize. That has been the case since 1999 when their first competition film, Rosetta, swooped in at the last minute and won the Palme d’Or and Best Actress. They won a second Palme in 2005 for The Child, the Grand Jury Prize in 2011 for Kid with a Bike, Screenplay in 2008 for Lorna’s Silence and Director in 2019 for Young Ahmed. No matter what the jury, the Dardennes continue to impress, yet none of their films has brought them an Oscar nomination. Their 2011 pic Two Days, One Night did get a surprise Best Actress nomination for Marion Cotillard, but that has been it. The Belgian brothers are a good bet to be in the Cannes winners circle again this year with Tori and Lokita , an irresistible and deeply affecting tale of two West African immigrant adolescents trying to pass themselves off as brother and sister in order to get … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne’s ‘Tori And Lokita’

‘Yellowjackets’ Creators, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress Celebrate “F*cked Up Women” – Contenders TV
Showtime ’s hit drama Yellowjackets is a multi-generational story that touches on hints of cannibalism and the supernatural. For co-creator Ashley Lyle , it’s a universal tale of flawed women. The show tells parallel stories about a high school soccer team surviving after a plane crash in 1996, and the survivors as adults in the present. “Our goal was to take this high concept that would suck people in and use it to disguise our story about f*cked up women,” Lyle said on a Deadline Contenders panel on Saturday at Paramount Studios. As grown-up survivor Shauna, Melanie Lynskey said we’ve only seen the beginning of her character’s unraveling. Shauna embarked on an affair and killed a rabbit in Season 1. Lynskey also said she was ready to take a break after having a baby but Yellowjackets was too good to pass up. “I love that I’m playing someone who on the surface is an ordinary housewife, and then goes in so many directions,” Lynskey said. “There’s still so … [Read more...] about ‘Yellowjackets’ Creators, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress Celebrate “F*cked Up Women” – Contenders TV
The Emancipation of Steven Tyler
F or a moment, Steven Tyler almost runs out of words. He’s standing too close to the edge of a Laurel Canyon cliff, exulting in the panorama of Los Angeles at his feet, the city’s sprawl giving way to white-capped mountains on the horizon. Off to his left, past green hills, a gang of clouds has singled out the HOLLYWOOD sign for a blast of rain. A sharp wind ruffles Tyler’s hair as he takes it all in. A deep breath of cool air, then he resumes the monologue that’s been running since he learned to speak – or, as he puts it, since he was “vaccinated with a phonograph needle.” “It’s all magical,” Tyler says in his excited rasp, pointing out the storm. “Hollywood is crying, because the Oscars are happening tomorrow night – it’s sad to see the year go, but it’s also crying tears of joy, because it’s all going to start all over again.” Tyler means this stuff, all of it, and he can make you buy into it too. He’s in a manic, mystical state of awe and gratitude these days, practically … [Read more...] about The Emancipation of Steven Tyler
