While it underperformed by quite a bit last weekend, by most box office standards, 20th Century Fox's War For the Planet Of the Apes still managed to come out on top, taking in $56.2 million, which was more on par with the franchise opener Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) in 2011, than its predecessor Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($72.6 million) in 2014. This weekend, those damn dirty apes go up against three vastly different newcomers, Warner Bros.' World War II epic Dunkirk, Universal's R-rated comedy Girls Trip and STX Entertainment's sci-fi thriller Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Charles S. Cohen: I’m at the Oscars every year. We have had eight nominations since I started Cohen Media Group. Two years ago we had The Insult, and Agnès Varda and JR’s Faces Places, which was nominated for best documentary. It’s not as if we’ve stopped looking for the best films we can find, it’s just that it’s become very competitive and I think the quality and range of opportunities has been much diminished than in previous years. But of course we’ll have a good presence at Berlin and Cannes. We’re still very involved in pre-buys and acquisitions of finished films. I have also started production on John Madden war movie Operation Mincemeat with Colin Firth.
