British indies will soon have the opportunity to compete in a tender process to produce three of the BBC ’s biggest shows: Antiques Roadshow, Songs of Praise and Young Musician of the Year. Antiques Roadshow and Young Musician of the Year are being tendered for the first time while Songs of Praise was issued in 2016, with BBC Studios losing out to independent producers Avanti and Nine Lives Media. After five years, those producers have brought their partnership to an end, according to the BBC, which will now have the opportunity to win the show back. The tendering process began several years ago when the BBC’s in-house producer BBC Studios was commercialized. The process is a trade-off for the outfit being allowed to produce shows for third parties for the first time. The overseas tally is now $54.8M for a global total of $100.12M . The Genndy Tartakovsky-helmed threequel set a new record as Sony’s biggest animated opening for the same group of 42 new markets and was No. 1 in 33. 6th Update, Sunday AM: With chart In a box office defeat that no one anticipated, Denzel Washington’s first sequel ever, Equalizer 2 , stole most of the No. 1 money away from Universal ’s Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again , $35.8M to $34.4M . Even more for Sony to relish is that Equalizer 2 beat its first chapter’s $34.1M opening plus it’s the second back-to-back No. 1 opening for Sony this summer after last weekend’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation . Mamma Mia 2 also improved upon its first installment’s $27.7M start by 24%. For director Antoinie Fuqua, Equalizer 2 reps the highest opening of his career besting The Magnificent Seven ($34.7M). 6th Writethru, Sunday: Disney is seeing Ant-Man and the Wasp landing near the lower end of its tracking with an estimated $76M which is $500K shy of where rivals see it after a $23.6M Saturday that’s 31% down from Friday, a sharper decline than many were expecting which was around -15%. This now marks a 33% improvement upon the first Ant-Man ‘s $57.2M opening, which turned around a 3.1x for a $180M final domestic. The multiple on Ant-Man and the Wasp is forecasted to be lower at 2.75x, but that will still get the super insects over $200M stateside. Even though the sequel is coming in lower than what many were anticipating yesterday, it’s still a win for Disney in that they expanded the superheroes’ commercial prospects, granted not to lofty results. Austrian writer-director Sebastian Meise has been named president of the Jury at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival . He’ll be joined on his jury by screenwriter and producer Lucile Hadžihalilović, writer-director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, actor Milan Marić and producer and senior consultant for international co-productions Katriel Schory. Meise co-founded Viennese production company Freibeuter Film before his acclaimed debut feature film Still Life premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and garnered several awards. His further credits include documentary Outing and Great Freedom, the latter of which won the Cannes Jury Prize for Un Certain Regard and was also awarded the Heart Of Sarajevo award for Best Feature Film and Best Actor (George Friedrich).
