Just minutes after California announced that seven counties — including San Francisco — were being allowed to reopen further due to falling Covid -19 numbers, Governor Gavin Newsom excoriated a Tuesday decision by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to lift that state’s mask mandate. Sharing an Associated Press story on Twitter, Newsom wrote simply, “Absolutely reckless.” Absolutely reckless. https://t.co/3O5GsbSLpM — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) March 2, 2021 Newsom, a Democrat and Abbott, a Republican, have some things in common. They are the governors of the two most populous states in the nation. They have also both recently dealt with unparalleled natural disasters — wildfires in CA and freezing weather across TX — while simultaneously confronting the Covid-19 pandemic. Newsom was criticized for one of America’s longest and most stringent lockdowns. Abbott was attacked by many in his own party for the mask mandate and other restrictions. Both officials have been … [Read more...] about CA Gov. Gavin Newsom Rips Texas Counterpart Greg Abbott For Lifting Mask Requirement: “Absolutely Reckless”

California Governor Gavin Newsom Makes Covid-19 Missteps As He Faces Recall, New Republican Challenger
California Governor Gavin Newsom was half an hour late to his own party on Monday. Scheduled to speak at a Covid-19 news conference at 11:30 pm, he didn’t appear until noon. That’s unlike the governor, but this is an unusual time for him. Newsom is the target of a statewide recall effort, and activists working to put his removal to a vote say that they have garnered 1.3 million of the estimated 1.5 million signatures needed. TV ads targeting Newsom are set to hit this week. Also on Monday, a new Republican challenger, businessman John Cox, who Newsom beat handily in the last election, declared his intention to challenge the governor in the proposed recall election if it qualifies for the ballot, or says he will run against Newsom if he seeks a second term in 2022. Cox again threw his hat into the ring on Monday with an ad painting himself as an outsider. California Governor Gavin Newsom Heckled By Protesters And Politicians Alike As State’s Covid-19 Mistakes Multiply
California Governor Gavin Newsom was heckled at a live news conference on Wednesday as he sought to explain the state’s evolving response to the Covid-19 pandemic. “RE-call NEW-som! RE-call NEW-som!” was heard over and over as the governor announced a new vaccination site in the hard-hit Central Valley. It was the latest in a parade of events he has held this week to celebrate the openings of larger sites across the state, including two at ballparks in Oakland and San Diego. Later in the day, however, it was revealed that the state’s largest venue would be shutting down due to a lack of vaccine. It was emblematic of the duality present in California’s current response to the pandemic. On the one hand, infections are down and the governor and other officials have loosened restrictions on retail and restaurants. As of Wednesday, one-tenth of the state’s population had been vaccinated. At least three vaccination super sites have been inaugurated recently with the … [Read more...] about California Governor Gavin Newsom Heckled By Protesters And Politicians Alike As State’s Covid-19 Mistakes Multiply
California Governor Gavin Newsom Chooses Big Political Donors To Run State’s Vaccination Program
California said late Monday that Blue Shield had been chosen as the state’s third-party administrator for vaccine distribution. Gov. Gavin Newsom has been promising for weeks to release details of the contract, the details of which were made public yesterday, a holiday — the same day the no-bid contract went into effect. Under the contract, an algorithm created by Blue Shield will sort out vaccine distribution across California. The Newsom administration will have final say on where vaccines are distributed and what the criteria determine how many vaccines go to each site. Blue Shield stands to earn up to $15 million, a sum that is capped in the contract. The deal with Blue Shield and another with Kaiser were authorized by Newsom under an emergency provision that does not require legislative approval. The governor announced the deal late last month, but the contract was not signed until Friday. Terms of the contract run until December 31, 2021. Details of the deal … [Read more...] about California Governor Gavin Newsom Chooses Big Political Donors To Run State’s Vaccination Program
Governor Gavin Newsom Closes Orange County Beaches; O.C. Sheriff Says He Won’t Enforce Order
Citing images of beachgoers crowding the sand at Newport Beach last weekend, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that he would close the beaches in Orange County. “We’re guided by health,” the governor said while calling the closing a “temporary pause” and emphasizing the need to “meet the conditions as they change.” Those words were not well-received by Orange County officials, including Sheriff Don Barnes. “The photographs I saw, quite honestly, were a stark contrast to what the governor’s acting on,” Barnes said, adding that he is “not taking enforcement action on this order.” “My intent…is to seek voluntary compliance,” Barnes said. “I have no desire to enforce…through arrest.” Related Story L.A.
